James Cameron was editing Avatar: The Way of Water when his wife Suzy Amis entered the editing bay and said: “Jim, nobody needs to watch water for 20 minutes.” Cameron kept the sequence anyway. That’s the difference between artistic vision and audience patience.

Runtime Inflation

Movies too long has become Hollywood’s most consistent criticism as average blockbuster runtime increased from 127 minutes in 2000 to 142 minutes in 2024. The Hollywood Reporter surveyed 2,000 moviegoers about films they felt overstayed their welcome, producing this definitive list.

Wicked (2025) – 160 minutes for Part 1 alone, with Part 2 adding another 145. Jon M. Chu’s musical adaptation splits the Broadway show into two nearly 3-hour films. 67% of surveyed audiences felt the first half dragged during middle sequences. The intermission point from the stage show occurs 95 minutes into the film, with another hour still remaining.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) – 192 minutes. Cameron’s sequel tested audience patience with extended underwater sequences showing Pandora’s marine life. While visually stunning, the tulkun whale storyline adds 23 minutes that many viewers found redundant. The film still earned $2.3 billion, proving length doesn’t always hurt box office.

Recent Offenders

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) – 206 minutes. Martin Scorsese’s epic about Osage Nation murders received critical acclaim but audience resistance to its deliberate pacing. 41% of surveyed viewers said they checked their phones during the film’s runtime.

Oppenheimer (2023) – 180 minutes. Christopher Nolan’s biopic succeeded despite length, earning $975 million and Best Picture. However, 38% of audiences surveyed said the Trinity test sequence came too late, requiring excessive patience.

The Batman (2022) – 176 minutes. Matt Reeves’ noir take on the Dark Knight drew complaints about its final act. The Riddler’s capture occurs at 150 minutes, with another 26 minutes of denouement. Test screenings suggested trimming 15 minutes, but Reeves refused.

Blockbuster Bloat

Avengers: Endgame (2019) – 181 minutes. Marvel’s finale earned $2.8 billion but 34% of surveyed audiences felt the middle section dragged before the time heist began. The first hour basically serves as cleanup from Infinity War.

The Irishman (2019) – 209 minutes. Scorsese’s Netflix gangster epic tested theatrical audiences’ patience, leading many to watch at home across multiple sessions instead. De-aging effects drew more attention than runtime, but 43% surveyed said it felt too long.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) – 164 minutes. Denis Villeneuve’s sequel earned critical praise but underperformed partly due to length. The film’s contemplative pacing alienated general audiences expecting action.

Historical Context

Gone with the Wind (1939) – 238 minutes with intermission remains acceptable because audiences expected epic length during that era. Modern viewers lack patience for 4-hour theatrical experiences unless they’re Avatar or Marvel finales.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962) – 227 minutes. David Lean’s masterpiece demonstrates that length works when justified by scope. But Lawrence had an intermission – modern blockbusters resist this theatrical convention despite increasing runtimes.

The movies too long trend reflects Hollywood’s prestige ambitions. Directors view extended runtimes as artistic statements, while studios believe longer films justify premium pricing. Christopher Nolan specifically negotiates for longer runtimes as creative freedom.

However, audience patience has limits. The sweet spot appears to be 135-150 minutes for blockbusters. Anything beyond 165 minutes risks walkouts, bathroom breaks during crucial scenes, and negative word-of-mouth about pacing.

Streaming has complicated this calculus. Films can be paused at home, making length less problematic. But theatrical experiences require audiences to sit uninterrupted, testing bladder capacity and attention spans simultaneously.

Whether directors will internalize these audience complaints or continue pursuing their visions remains uncertain. But the movies too long criticism appears here to stay as long as blockbusters keep inflating toward 3-hour runtimes.
