Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine, a singing circus impresario, and a time-traveling duke, but he has never played a shepherd who gets murdered so that his sheep can solve the crime. Until now. The Sheep Detectives, the new mystery comedy from Amazon MGM Studios, asks the question: what if Babe: Pig in the City crossed paths with Knives Out, but everyone involved was significantly woolier?
Jackman stars as George Hardy, a shepherd who loves his flock perhaps a bit too much. When he turns up dead—brutally murdered, according to the official synopsis that seems oddly dark for a movie about sheep—the responsibility falls to his flock to investigate the crime. Yes, actual sheep. With faces. And presumably interior monologues about grass and justice.
Directed by Kyle Balda, who helmed the Minions movies and knows a thing or two about making non-verbal characters emote, the film appears to operate on the same logic that made Paddington a critical darling: take a ridiculous premise, execute it with absolute sincerity, and watch the audience weep over animated livestock. The sheep reportedly investigate various suspects while navigating the human world, which suggests scenes of ovine sleuths interrogating suspects, examining crime scenes, and possibly wearing tiny deerstalker hats.

Jackman’s involvement is the key selling point here. After years of intense dramatic roles and physically demanding action parts, he appears to be having the time of his life playing a man whose primary relationship is with his flock. The new trailer reveals a tone that balances genuine mystery with absurdist comedy—imagine Agatha Christie if Hercule Poirot were replaced by five animals who communicate primarily through bleating.
The film also seems to be commenting on the human tendency to underestimate animals, a theme that resonates in an era of increased environmental awareness. When the sheep prove more competent at investigation than the local police, it’s both a punchline and a subtle critique of institutional incompetence. Or it’s just funny to watch sheep wear disguises. Either way, the film knows exactly what it’s doing.
Amazon MGM is positioning this as a four-quadrant hit, the kind of family-friendly entertainment that plays equally well to children who love animals and adults who appreciate a well-crafted mystery. With Jackman’s star power, Balda’s animation credentials, and a premise so bizarre it can’t be ignored, The Sheep Detectives could be the surprise breakout of the summer.
The question isn’t whether the sheep will solve the murder—it’s whether you’ll be able to look at your next lamb chop without feeling a twinge of guilt about supporting the agricultural-industrial complex. Just kidding. Mostly.
