Project Hail Mary movie just became Amazon MGM’s biggest hit ever, and I am not surprised. Ryan Gosling plays a science teacher who wakes up in space with amnesia and befriends an alien spider named Rocky. If that sentence doesn’t make you want to watch this immediately, we can’t be friends.

Project Hail Mary movie works because it commits to the bit. Gosling’s Ryland Grace is a mess—talking to himself, forgetting his own name, making jokes about “toot to scoot” while explaining astrophage biology to a rock creature. The science is real enough to feel smart but loose enough to not bore you. And the friendship between Grace and Rocky is genuinely moving, which is wild because Rocky is literally a spider made of stones.

The film opened to $80.6 million domestically, crushing Creed III’s previous Amazon record. Project Hail Mary movie has now made over $141 million globally, with audiences giving it an A CinemaScore and critics landing at 95% Rotten Tomatoes. For a nearly two-and-a-half-hour sci-fi film about alien microbes, those numbers are insane.
What makes it special is the heart. Project Hail Mary movie could have been cold and procedural like Interstellar, but Lord and Miller keep it warm and funny. Grace isn’t a chosen hero—he’s a substitute teacher who got drafted because he was the only one available. His incompetence is relatable. His courage is earned. And his bond with Rocky proves that friendship transcends species, language, and the vacuum of space.
The visuals are stunning without being overwhelming. Project Hail Mary movie uses practical sets for the spaceship interiors, giving Grace’s isolation a tactile quality. The alien planet looks alien—purple skies, strange flora, that sense of wonder that sci-fi does best. And the ending, which I won’t spoil, hits harder than a spaceship reentry.
If you missed it in theaters, seek it out. Project Hail Mary movie is the kind of original blockbuster that Hollywood claims it can’t make anymore, except Amazon just proved it can. Gosling is perfect. The science is cool. And Rocky deserves his own spinoff.
Watch Project Hail Mary movie on streaming and prepare to cry about a space spider. It happens to the best of us.
