Jennifer Lopez plays a CEO who falls for her lawyer in Office Romance, the raunchy Netflix rom-com written specifically for her by Brett Goldstein.
Office Romance is exactly what happens when two Ted Lasso writers take a train ride and decide Jennifer Lopez needs to be the boss for once. The Netflix rom-com, which began streaming June 5, 2026, stars Lopez as Jackie Cruz, the CEO of AirCruz airline, and Brett Goldstein as Daniel Blanchflower, the British lawyer who falls for her while trying to keep her company from legal disaster. The catch? AirCruz has a strict no-dating policy, which means their chemistry is technically a firing offense.
The film marks Lopez’s return to romantic comedy after years of action thrillers and music documentaries, but with a twist that separates it from her Maid in Manhattan era. “Office Romance is the first time I’m the boss,” Lopez told Netflix’s Skip Intro podcast. “I’m not playing someone with all these aspirations, who’s the maid or the wedding planner working for the rich people. Jackie built this company.” This is a rom-com where the woman has power, the man is professionally subordinate, and the conflict isn’t about whether she can have it all but whether she can break her own rules without crashing the company.

Office Romance Writing Origin Story Is Almost Too Cute
Office Romance began on a three-hour train ride between Manchester and London while Goldstein and co-writer Joe Kelly were filming Ted Lasso Season 3. Both are self-described “old school rom-com” fans who felt the genre had lost its edge. “We were like, ‘Who’s your dream person to make a rom-com with?'” Goldstein recalled. “Without hesitation, we were both like, ‘J.Lo, because she’s the best rom-com actor.'” They wrote the script specifically for her, sent it with a note reading “You’re at the top of our list. It’s a list of one,” and assumed it would never happen.

What they didn’t know was that Lopez was already obsessed with Ted Lasso. Her favorite character is Roy Kent—Goldstein’s character—which means she was technically fangirling over her future co-star before she knew he existed. When the script arrived, she immediately said yes. Director Ol Parker, known for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Ticket to Paradise, joined in November 2024 to bring his signature blend of glossy romance and broad comedy.
The supporting cast is a comedy nerd’s dream. Tony Hale plays the HR director who keeps catching the leads in compromising positions. Amy Sedaris appears as a chaotic colleague. Betty Gilpin, fresh from American Primeval, plays Jackie’s right-hand woman. And Edward James Olmos reunites with Lopez 28 years after playing her father in Selena, once again portraying her onscreen dad. The film shot primarily in New Jersey, with a tropical detour to the Dominican Republic replacing the originally planned Vancouver location because Parker wanted “water behind them” for the romantic scenes.
Office Romance is rated R for graphic nudity, sexual material, and language throughout, which makes it the raunchiest entry in Lopez’s rom-com filmography. The ending features a swoony kiss and a post-credits engagement scene, because even R-rated workplace comedies need their happily ever after. Whether it works for you depends on your tolerance for cringe humor and your belief that two people this attractive could ever be subtle about their affair.
Stream Office Romance on Netflix now and watch Jennifer Lopez finally play the boss in a rom-com that breaks HR rules and genre conventions.
