James Bond Search Officially Begins

The hunt for the next James Bond is officially on with Denis Villeneuve directing and Nina Gold casting. Here is everything we know.

James Bond search is no longer theoretical. Amazon MGM Studios has officially started auditioning actors for the role of 007, ending years of speculation and rumor-mongering that had everyone from Aaron Taylor-Johnson to Jacob Elordi supposedly “in talks.” Nina Gold, the casting director who found Daisy Ridley for Star Wars and filled out the world of Game of Thrones, has been tapped to find Daniel Craig’s successor.

The studio confirmed the news in a statement: “The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.” Translation: they are looking, they are not telling, and your favorite actor probably auditioned last week without anyone knowing.

Denis Villeneuve directs the 26th Bond film, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing. Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, wrote the script. The film is expected to begin production in 2027 for a 2028 release, which means Gold has time to be thorough—or, given Hollywood’s pace, to panic-cast someone six months from now when the deadline looms.

James Bond Search Heats Up With New Names

James Bond search has already generated fresh contenders beyond the usual suspects. Jack Lowden, whom Gold cast in Slow Horses as River Cartwright, brings established spy credentials and pre-existing rapport with the casting director. Louis Patridge, who starred in Steven Knight’s House of Guinness, represents the younger direction Amazon reportedly wants for a five-to-six film run. Tom Francis, a 26-year-old Olivier Award winner for Sunset Boulevard, has reportedly already auditioned.

The rumor mill had previously focused on Jacob Elordi following Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights, plus Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. But as history shows, the names that leak are rarely the ones who get cast. Sean Connery was a relative unknown. George Lazenby had only done commercials. Daniel Craig was established but not a household name until Casino Royale made him one.

Gold’s involvement signals serious intent. She earned an Oscar nomination for casting Hamnet, the first year the Academy recognized casting as a category. Her credits include The Crown, Les Misérables, The Martian, and Conclave. She understands how to find performers who can carry franchises without being overshadowed by them.

Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM’s head of film, emphasized the gravity of the decision at CinemaCon: “We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.” Pairing Bond with Villeneuve, Pascal, Heyman, and Knight suggests Amazon wants prestige alongside popcorn.

The only certainty? Whoever gets cast will spend the next decade explaining why they are not trying to imitate Daniel Craig.
