Cregger was hired in January 2025 after a bidding war between four major studios including Warner Bros. and Netflix. Sony’s Columbia Pictures ultimately won distribution rights, setting a September 18, 2026 release date in IMAX. The director co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten and has been refreshingly honest about his approach: he never watched the previous Resident Evil films, and he’s drawing inspiration directly from the games—specifically Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4—rather than the Paul W.S. Zach Cregger Resident Evil represents his first foray into established IP, and his insistence on telling an original story within that universe shows the kind of creative confidence that usually produces great work.
Principal photography wrapped in Prague after a three-month shoot that included location work in the Czech Republic. Dariusz Wolski, Ridley Scott’s longtime cinematographer, shot the film, which means it will look significantly more expensive than its budget suggests. The first footage debuted at CinemaCon in April 2026, with Cregger telling PlayStation Blog that he wanted to “construct a story that could live in the world of Resident Evil and be maybe on the periphery of the events of Resident Evil 2.”
