The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek hero who spends a decade trying to return home after the Trojan War while battling cyclopes, sirens, and his own terrible decision-making. Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron round out a cast so stacked it feels like Nolan called in every favor he has ever earned. The film carries a reported budget of $250 million, which means it needs to perform like this for several weekends to turn a profit, but the opening numbers suggest audiences are more than willing to fund Nolan’s increasingly expensive hobbies.
The Odyssey Score Uses Zero Orchestra Instruments
The Odyssey took its biggest creative risk before a single frame hit the screen. Nolan banned composer Ludwig Göransson from using a traditional orchestra, insisting that ancient Greece did not have violins and cellos. Göransson responded by purchasing 35 bronze gongs and layering them with synthesizers to create a sonic landscape that feels both ancient and alien. The director also suggested using the lyre for the moment when Odysseus plucks his bow, because apparently Nolan’s idea of a fun Friday night is researching Bronze Age musical instruments.
This is not the first time Nolan has weaponized authenticity. For Dunkirk, he used real naval destroyers. For Oppenheimer, he recreated atomic explosions without CGI. But telling a composer who just won two Oscars that he cannot use the tool that defines his profession? That is a level of creative control that would make most filmmakers flinch. Göransson not only accepted the challenge—he traveled to every filming location to study indigenous music traditions, turning the score into a global research project that happens to accompany a blockbuster.
The result is a film that sounds like nothing else in modern cinema. When the teaser dropped, those gongs and synths backed footage of Damon facing off against a one-eyed giant, and the internet collectively lost its mind. The trailer pulled 121.4 million views in 24 hours, making it the eighth most-watched trailer of 2025. By opening weekend, IMAX tickets had sold out within an hour of going on sale.
The Odyssey is currently playing in theaters, and if the opening weekend momentum holds, Nolan will have delivered his third consecutive billion-dollar earner after Oppenheimer and this. Not bad for a movie whose source material is older than most countries.
