Dune Part Three teaser just arrived, and Paul Atreides is not the hero you remember. Timothée Chalamet returns as the emperor in Denis Villeneuve final chapter, but this version of Paul is shaken, paranoid, and drowning in the blood of his own jihad. The footage shows a man who seized the galaxy and immediately lost himself in the process. It is dark. It is tense. It is exactly what Dune Messiah promised.
The teaser confirms the story jumps seventeen years after Part Two. Paul now rules from a golden throne, but his visions are failing him. He admits he cannot see what is ahead anymore, which is terrifying for a leader who built his entire reign on prescience. Meanwhile, his relationship with Chani has completely fractured. Zendaya is back, but she is not standing by his side. She wants a child, and she wants justice for the betrayal that put him on the throne with another woman.

Enter Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a shapeshifter who wants regime change and plans to strike the core of imperial power. Pattinson looks like he is having the time of his life playing a faceless assassin who can become anyone. There is also the return of Duncan Idaho, now a ghola sent as a gift to Paul. Jason Momoa plays the resurrected warrior, and his scenes with Chalamet are loaded with tension. In one exchange, Duncan tells Paul he is way beyond redemption. Paul asks why he is there. Duncan says it is to deliver a peace proposal. Then he adds the kicker. It is meant to destroy you.

Villeneuve has called this his most personal film of the trilogy, and the teaser backs that up. The first Dune was contemplative. The second was a war movie. Dune Part Three is pure political thriller with action dialed up and emotions dialed even higher. Florence Pugh returns as Princess Irulan, now fully entrenched in the imperial machine. Anya Taylor-Joy appears as Alia, Paul sister, and Chalamet has already called her terrifying and amazing. Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem are back too, because this franchise knows better than to waste its best actors.

Hans Zimmer is composing again, and the teaser score sounds heavier and more mournful than before. The production design by Patrice Vermette turns the imperial court into a gilded prison, all gold and shadow. Warner Bros is pushing the IMAX 70mm experience hard, and the footage was shot with those massive screens in mind.

The film hits theaters December 18. Villeneuve and Chalamet unveiled the teaser at a global fan event, and the director joked that he should have slept more during production. Chalamet praised him for buckling in and finishing the trilogy consecutively, calling it a privilege to work at this level of artistry.
So here is the question. Can Dune Part Three stick the landing? The teaser suggests Villeneuve is not afraid to make Paul the villain of his own story. That is a bold move for a blockbuster, and it is exactly why this trilogy matters. December cannot come fast enough.
