The first trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series has finally arrived, and it’s already broken records as the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history. That’s not a surprise. What is a surprise is how much this actually looks like Harry Potter instead of some generic fantasy show that happens to have a lightning scar in it. The teaser gives us everything: the Sorting Hat, the wand choosing the wizard, Quidditch players circling the pitch, the Mirror of Erised, Wizard’s Chess, and even the Cloak of Invisibility. It’s fan service, but it’s the kind of fan service that earns its place.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is scheduled to premiere on Christmas 2026, which means Warner Bros. is positioning this as the definitive holiday event for families who have already watched the original films seventeen times and need something new to argue about at dinner. The series plans to dedicate each season to a single book, which means eight episodes to explore details the movies had to cut for time. That’s the whole pitch, really. More Hogwarts. More magic. More of the stuff you actually care about.
The casting process was genuinely massive. Over 32,000 children auditioned for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, with the casting team reviewing between 500 and 1,000 tapes per day. The winners were Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. McLaughlin had a small role in a Sky comedy with Nick Frost. Stanton played Matilda in the West End. Stout had zero acting credits. That’s either incredibly brave or incredibly reckless, and honestly, it might be both.
The adult cast is where things get genuinely interesting. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, Janet McTeer takes over as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Snape, and Nick Frost plays Hagrid. Warwick Davis is the only original film actor returning, reprising his role as Professor Flitwick. Peter Serafinowicz was cast as Peeves, the poltergeist who never made it into the films but terrorized the books. Kit Harington replaced Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2. It’s a mix of bold choices and safe bets that somehow feels exactly right for a reboot.
Hans Zimmer is composing the score, which immediately puts this series in a different league than most television productions. Francesca Gardiner, a Succession consulting producer, serves as showrunner with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. The trailer shows a Christmas snowball fight that never appeared in the films, along with Hagrid making a snow angel. These are the small moments that suggest this adaptation actually cares about the books rather than just hitting the same plot beats with different actors.
If you’re skeptical about a Harry Potter reboot, you’re not alone. The original films cast a very long shadow. But this trailer makes a compelling case that there’s still room to explore this world with more depth and detail than cinema allowed. Harry Potter isn’t just being remade. It’s being expanded. And for once, that expansion feels like it might actually be worth your time.
