Nothing says “quality sibling bonding time” quite like discovering a decomposed corpse in your childhood basement while cleaning out Mom’s house. The Adulthood movie cast led by Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario premiered at TIFF 2025, proving that Alex Winter’s directorial vision extends far beyond Bill & Ted’s time-traveling shenanigans into much darker, bloodier territory.
Basement Nightmare
Written by Michael M.B. Galvin and directed by Winter, the Adulthood movie cast explores what happens when adult siblings Megan (Scodelario) and Noah (Gad) return to their family home after their mother’s stroke. Their basement cleanup takes a horrific turn when they discover Mrs. Metzger’s remains, their missing neighbor from the 1990s who everyone assumed was killed by her abusive husband.

Filmed in Ottawa from May 2024, the Republic Pictures production cost approximately $12 million with additional backing from Olive Hill Media. “It embodies a sense of looming anxiety intertwined with a wonderfully dark humor,” Gad explained during TIFF interviews. “When you combine these elements, it becomes a delicate balancing act, but Alex was incredibly assured and had a clear vision.”
Family Dysfunction
The Adulthood movie cast includes Anthony Carrigan, Billie Lourd, and Winter himself in supporting roles, creating an ensemble that balances noir thriller elements with pitch-black comedy. “This is a very dark comedy about the impossibility of being an adult in modern life,” Winter described his directorial approach.
The film follows Noah’s plan to bury the evidence based on his experience writing for Blue Bloods, because apparently watching cop procedurals qualifies you for criminal disposal. When the body resurfaces and their scheming caregiver (Lourd) demands $10,000 for silence, the siblings spiral into increasingly desperate damage control.
Dark Comedy
“It’s told through the prism of, like, a noir Coen Brothers-esque escapade in which one bad choice leads to doubling down again and again on a series of bad choices from which there’s no return,” Gad noted about the Adulthood movie cast dynamic during their Collider interview.

Winter, known primarily for documentaries like Zappa and The YouTube Effect, brings his investigative instincts to fictional family secrets. The film releases theatrically September 19 through Republic Pictures before streaming September 23, positioning itself as counter-programming to typical fall blockbusters.
Despite mixed early reactions—some critics found the tone uneven—the Adulthood movie cast commits fully to Winter’s vision of suburban dysfunction. “How quickly things can go wrong to more wrong in today’s world,” Winter explained about the film’s contemporary relevance, suggesting that family secrets have never been more dangerous to uncover.
