Cat-Sitting Gone Wrong

Butler plays Hank Thompson, a washed-up baseball player turned bartender in 1990s New York who agrees to watch his punk neighbor’s cat for a few days. Simple favor, right? Wrong. That innocent cat-sitting gig spirals into a citywide chase involving multiple criminal gangs who all think Hank has something they desperately want.

The Caught Stealing streaming release comes courtesy of Sony Pictures, who fast-tracked the digital rollout after decent theatrical numbers. The film’s available for $24.99 purchase or $19.99 rental on Prime Video, Apple TV and YouTube. Physical 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD releases are coming later, but digital satisfies immediate viewing needs.

Aronofsky’s Genre

This marks a major departure for Darren Aronofsky, the mind behind Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. Instead of his usual psychological nightmares, he’s crafted a darkly comic thriller based on Charlie Huston’s novel. The film captures 1998 Lower East Side perfectly, with grimy dive bars and authentic street-level tension.

Zoë Kravitz plays Hank’s girlfriend Yvonne, while Matt Smith embodies punk rocker neighbor Russ whose cat triggers the chaos. The supporting cast includes Regina King as Detective Elise Roman, Liev Schreiber as crime boss Lipa Drucker, and Vincent D’Onofrio as Mully Drucker. Bad Bunny (Benito Martínez Ocasio) appears as Colorado, adding unexpected star power.

Butler’s Baseball Background

Ironically, Butler revealed he hated baseball as a kid despite playing a former high school star. “I was too shy as a child to actually engage in team sports,” he told Elle. “They attempted to enroll me in baseball, and I returned home in tears, saying, ‘I don’t want to be around those other kids.'”

His preparation involved extensive physical training to convincingly portray someone who once had athletic promise. Aronofsky demanded authenticity in every baseball reference and movement, pushing Butler through grueling workouts to achieve the right physicality for Hank’s backstory.

Critical Reception

Caught Stealing streaming reviews have been polarizing. Some critics praised Butler’s committed performance and Aronofsky’s visual style, while others found the plot convoluted. The film currently holds a 65 Metacritic score, suggesting decent but not universal appeal.

Action sequences blend practical effects with Aronofsky’s signature cinematographic flair. The cat, named Bud in the film, becomes almost a character itself as various criminal factions pursue its mysterious connection to their schemes.

The Caught Stealing streaming window provides perfect opportunity for viewers who enjoy crime capers with comedic elements. Butler’s charisma carries the film through its more absurd moments, while the ensemble cast delivers memorable supporting performances.
