It happened. Again. Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing film of all time. Again. The Encore re-release pushed the total past $2.92 billion, which is enough to beat Avatar for the second time in six years. James Cameron is probably fine with it. He’s got Avatar 3 coming out. He’ll be fine.
Avengers Endgame Encore made $86 million worldwide in its opening weekend. That’s a ridiculous number for a re-release. It made $26 million in North America alone. That’s more than most new movies make. People really wanted to see Endgame on a big screen again. Or they wanted to see the new footage. Or they just wanted to feel something. Whatever the reason, they showed up.
The Encore version includes new post-credits scenes that set up Avengers: Doomsday. That’s the real reason this exists. It’s not a victory lap. It’s a marketing campaign. Disney is using the re-release to remind everyone that the MCU is still the biggest thing in the world. It’s working. Avengers Endgame Encore is the number one movie in the world right now. A six-year-old movie. That’s power.
The box office record is symbolic. Avatar was the champion for a decade. Endgame took the crown in 2019. Then Avatar took it back with a re-release in China. Now Endgame has it again. It’s a back-and-forth that will never really end. Every time one of them gets a re-release, the record changes hands. It’s silly. It’s also kind of fun.
Avengers Endgame Encore proves that the MCU still has a grip on the culture. The franchise has had a rough few years. The shows have been hit or miss. The movies have been divisive. But when you put the Avengers back in theaters, people show up. That’s not nothing. That’s the whole game.
Avengers: Doomsday comes out on December 18. The Encore re-release is the setup. The new post-credits scenes are the tease. If you haven’t seen them, you’re missing out on the beginning of the next phase. Avengers Endgame Encore is more than a re-release. It’s a bridge. It’s a reminder. It’s a victory lap. All three at once. That’s a lot for one movie. But Endgame has always been a lot.
