Cate Blanchett has played an elf queen, a fake heiress, and at least three different versions of Bob Dylan, but her latest role might be the most unhinged yet. The first image from Alpha Gang has arrived, and it features Blanchett as the leader of an alien invasion crew disguised as a 1950s leather-clad biker gang. If that sentence doesn’t immediately make you want to buy a ticket, we probably can’t be friends.

The Zellner brothers are directing, which means Alpha Gang is already operating on a very specific frequency. These are the same filmmakers who made Sasquatch Sunset, a movie about Bigfoot creatures wandering around the Pacific Northwest without speaking a single intelligible word. So yes, a sci-fi comedy about extraterrestrials who catch human emotions like a bad cold is exactly their speed. Blanchett plays Alpha One, the indomitable leader of the gang, and based on that first look, she is absolutely not here to make friends with Earthlings.
The premise is deliciously absurd. Alpha Gang arrives on our planet armed, dangerous, and ready to conquer. Then they discover feelings. Joy, fear, empathy, and worst of all, love start infecting the crew like a virus, and their whole plan for world domination begins to fall apart. It’s basically an alien invasion movie where the invaders are too emotionally overwhelmed to finish the job. Name one other film doing that right now. I’ll wait. The concept alone is worth the price of admission, and the Zellners have never been afraid to commit fully to a bit that sounds completely ridiculous on paper.

The cast is absolutely stacked beyond Blanchett. Chris Pine, Dave Bautista, Léa Seydoux, Lily-Rose Depp, Adria Arjona, Doona Bae, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Riley Keough round out the ensemble. That’s not a cast list. That’s a lineup that would make any film festival programmer weep with joy. The Zellners clearly went for broke on this one, and the result looks like a heightened reality where the 1950s never ended and aliens have terrible impulse control. You can already picture the chemistry between these actors playing emotionally confused invaders who just wanted to destroy Earth but got distracted by a good sunset.

Alpha Gang is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before hitting theaters on September 5, 2026. TIFF doesn’t just hand out Special Presentation slots to anyone, so the festival clearly sees something special here. Given the Zellners’ track record of making deeply weird movies that somehow find passionate audiences, Alpha Gang could be the kind of left-field hit that dominates conversations for months. Festival premieres can make or break a film’s trajectory, and this one feels positioned to break out in a major way.

Blanchett has described the Zellners’ work as surprising and delightful, which is high praise from someone who has worked with basically every major director alive. Alpha Gang represents the kind of mid-budget, genuinely original studio filmmaking that has become increasingly rare. It’s weird, it’s star-packed, and it has aliens in leather jackets experiencing their first crush. What more do you want from cinema? If this movie doesn’t make you laugh and question your own emotional stability, nothing will.
