Chris Columbus was directing a Christmas commercial in Atlanta when his phone rang. Steven Spielberg on the other end said: “It’s time to finish what we started.” That was August 2025, and now Gremlins 3 is officially happening after 33 years.

The $41 Million Question
Warner Bros just confirmed Gremlins 3 with a reported $85 million production budget – nearly double what the original cost in 1984. Columbus returns to direct while Spielberg produces through Amblin Entertainment, the same partnership that created the franchise.

The original Gremlins earned $153 million domestically ($212 million worldwide) on a $11 million budget. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) made $41 million domestic, significantly underperforming and killing sequel plans for three decades. Warner Bros needs to explain why now is the right time.
Columbus told The Hollywood Reporter exclusively that Gremlins 3 won’t be a reboot or soft remake. “We’re continuing Billy Peltzer’s story 35 years later,” he confirmed. “It’s about how the rules have changed – and what happens when Mogwai face modern technology.”
Zach Galligan Returns
Here’s the exciting part – Zach Galligan is in final negotiations to reprise Billy Peltzer, now a grandfather dealing with his family’s Mogwai inheritance. Phoebe Cates declined to return as Kate, but Columbus wrote her absence into the story organically.
The script, penned by Evil Dead Rise writer C. Robert Cargill, reportedly features Billy’s teenage granddaughter discovering Gizmo in her grandfather’s attic. Modern complications include smartphones, social media, and the question of what happens when Gremlins multiply in the age of viral videos.
Gremlins 3 will use practical puppetry combined with CGI enhancement – the same approach The Mandalorian uses for Grogu. Rick Baker’s creature effects studio is creating new Mogwai and Gremlin designs while maintaining the classic aesthetic. Weta Workshop is handling digital augmentation.
December 2027 Release
Warner Bros scheduled Gremlins 3 for December 19, 2027, positioning it directly against James Cameron’s Avatar 4. The Christmas horror-comedy slot mirrors the original’s June 1984 release, which pioneered the PG-13 rating after parental complaints about violence.
Columbus addressed concerns about modernizing the franchise: “The original worked because it reflected 1980s anxieties about consumerism and technology. This film reflects 2020s anxieties about screen addiction and artificial intelligence.”
Spielberg’s involvement is reportedly hands-on despite his producer credit. He’s attended all script meetings and approved the creature designs personally. His relationship with Columbus remains strong – they last collaborated on the Harry Potter films Spielberg nearly directed before Columbus took over.
The Gremlins franchise has maintained cultural presence through merchandise, Halloween costumes, and nostalgic references in shows like Stranger Things. Warner Bros believes Gen X nostalgia combined with Gen Z curiosity creates perfect conditions for revival.
Whether Gremlins 3 succeeds financially depends on balancing franchise loyalty with fresh storytelling. The $85 million budget suggests Warner Bros expects $300+ million global box office. With Columbus and Spielberg’s combined pedigree, hitting that target seems achievable.
Early concept art leaked online shows Gremlins wreaking havoc in an Amazon warehouse, suggesting the satire of corporate culture continues. If Columbus can match the original’s dark comedy while updating for modern audiences, we might finally get the sequel the franchise deserved decades ago.
