Adult Swim dropped a first look at Common Side Effects Season 2, and if you’ve been sleeping on this show, now is the time to catch up. The animated conspiracy thriller returns in early 2027, and the footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con confirms it’s still the weirdest, smartest thing on television.

Created by Joe Bennett and Steve Hely, Common Side Effects follows Marshall and Frances, former high school lab partners who get tangled up in a massive conspiracy after Marshall discovers a mushroom that can heal almost anything. That premise sounds like a setup for a fun sci-fi romp. It’s not. It’s a paranoid, morally complicated story about who gets to decide what medicine looks like and who profits from keeping people sick.
The voice cast is stacked. Dave King and Emily Pendergast lead as Marshall and Frances. Joseph Lee Anderson, Mike Judge, and Martha Kelly round out the main players. Judge and Greg Daniels executive produce alongside Bennett and Hely, which means the same team that gave you King of the Hill and Silicon Valley is behind this thing. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a signal.

Season 1 ended with Marshall and Frances in a very bad place. The mushroom was out in the world. The corporations were closing in. The show had built a world where every character was compromised and every solution created two new problems. It was the kind of ending that made waiting for Season 2 feel like a personal attack.
The first look doesn’t give away much plot, which is fine. Common Side Effects is the kind of show that’s better experienced than explained. What matters is that it’s coming back. Adult Swim confirmed the early 2027 window, and the extended footage showed that the animation is still gorgeous and unsettling in equal measure.
What makes this show work is its refusal to be simple. The bad guys aren’t cartoon villains. The good guys aren’t heroes. Everyone is just trying to survive a system that’s designed to chew them up. That’s not a fun pitch. But it’s a real one. And in a landscape full of shows that are afraid to be about anything, Common Side Effects is about everything.
If you haven’t watched Season 1, you have time. It’s not a long show. It’s not a hard show to find. And it’s the kind of thing that rewards paying attention. The second season is coming. The mushroom is still out there. Marshall and Frances are still in trouble. And you should probably be watching.
