Coyote movie news is the feel-good story of the year, and I don’t care how that sounds. Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent loser in animation history, just outlasted a major studio’s attempt to erase him from existence. Warner Bros. Discovery shelved Coyote vs. Acme in 2023 for a tax write-off—the same move they pulled with Batgirl—because David Zaslav looked at a finished movie and said “nah, I’d rather save money.” But the filmmakers fought back, found a new distributor, and now we’re getting it in theaters August 28, 2026.
Coyote movie has a plot so good it hurts. Will Forte plays a down-on-his-luck attorney who takes Wile E. Coyote’s case against the Acme Corporation, because every product they’ve ever sold him has exploded, malfunctioned, or caused catastrophic injury. John Cena plays Buddy Crane, the intimidating boss of Forte’s former law firm who now represents Acme. It’s a live-action/animation hybrid that leans into the absurdity of a coyote who buys rocket-powered roller skates and expects them to work.
James Gunn co-wrote the screenplay, which explains why the tone feels both nostalgic and slightly unhinged. The marketing is already legendary—they released a teaser on Tax Day showing Wile E. holding a sign that says “Check Your Write-Offs” before falling to his doom. The official trailer racked up 25.6 million views in 24 hours, setting a record for independent family films. The slogan “The Movie Acme Doesn’t Want You to See” is the perfect middle finger to Warner Bros.
Coyote movie survived because people actually care about art. When Batgirl got shelved, there was outrage but no recourse. This time, the filmmakers refused to let it die. They shopped it around, found Ketchup Entertainment willing to pay $50 million, and now a movie that was legally dead is getting a theatrical release. It’s the underdog story Wile E. himself would appreciate, except this time the coyote actually wins.
