Dewey Riley is dead. Or is he. David Arquette spent a chunk of this week taking fan questions online about his surprise Scream 7 comeback, and the whole thing turned into exactly the chaotic, wholesome mess you’d expect from a guy who once wrestled for a living and somehow still has a career.
Let’s rewind. Dewey got killed off in the fifth movie back in 2022, gutted by Mikey Madison’s Ghostface, and everyone assumed that was that. Then word broke that David Arquette was coming back for Scream 7, and the man himself later admitted the leak ruined what was supposed to be a surprise. He’s said as much in interviews, sounding like someone who really wanted his own death-scene reversal to land properly. Fair.
During the Q&A, most of the questions circled the same territory fans always want to poke at: how does a guy die on screen and just show up again two movies later? Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 Scream and is now directing this one, apparently made the whole thing worth it for Arquette. He’s talked before about how thrilling it was to work with Williamson in the director’s chair, especially with Wes Craven no longer around to steer the ship.
Of course, no David Arquette appearance is complete without someone bringing up the Scream 3 bangs. Yes, that haircut. Arquette has publicly taken the blame for talking Courteney Cox into a Bettie Page-inspired look for Gale Weathers that, by his own admission, did not work out. Cox has since said she’s not even sure the idea was his, then roasted him anyway, because that’s apparently just how their divorce works now — with love, and bangs.
Beyond Scream, the questions predictably veered into wrestling territory, because David Arquette’s professional wrestling era is the gift that keeps giving. The documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette chronicled his very real, very bruising attempt to rebuild credibility in the ring after his acting career hit a wall, and it remains one of the more oddly moving celebrity documentaries out there. He’s never shied away from admitting how much that chapter cost him, physically and otherwise.
What makes David Arquette such a fun subject for this kind of thing is that he doesn’t perform humility, he just has it. No spin, no PR polish, just a guy answering questions about his divorce, his death scene, and his decision to get thrown around a wrestling ring for sport, all in the same breath. Scream 7 hits theaters on February 27, 2026, and if this Q&A proved anything, it’s that Dewey Riley earned his resurrection.
