Some teasers sell you a movie. Rare ones make you sit still and wonder what you just watched. Lionsgate’s first teaser for Day Drinker, the horror thriller arriving in theaters on March 26, 2027, belongs to the second kind. Johnny Depp appears almost unrecognizable in it, and the internet has not stopped talking since.
What the teaser actually shows
The teaser gives us fragments, not answers. A private yacht on open water. A young bartender, played by Madelyn Cline, pouring drinks for wealthy strangers. And then Johnny Depp appears as a guest unlike any other — pale, unsettling, radiating quiet menace. The tone suggests horror wrapped inside an elegant thriller, something closer to The Menu or Ready or Not than a typical Lionsgate action film.
Fans of Depp’s darker work will recognize the energy. This is not the playful eccentric of Pirates of the Caribbean. This is closer to his intensity in Black Mass, where he buried his charm entirely and left audiences genuinely unsettled.
Who made Day Drinker
The director is Marc Webb, and his resume explains why this project feels so surprising. Webb gave us the heartbreaking romance (500) Days of Summer, the tender family drama Gifted with Chris Evans, two Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, and Disney’s live-action Snow White. He is a filmmaker of warmth. Watching him pivot into horror-thriller territory with Depp is one of the most interesting director swings of recent years.
The screenplay comes from Zach Dean, who wrote The Tomorrow War with Chris Pratt and Fast X. Behind the scenes, the film is produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road — the same producers who built the John Wick franchise. That alone tells you the studio trusts this team with suspense and violence done with precision.
The story we know so far
Cline plays a bartender working a private yacht who crosses paths with a mysterious guest, played by Depp. Slowly, they become entangled with a dangerous criminal figure, played by Penélope Cruz, and discover their lives are connected in ways nobody could have guessed. The supporting cast includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
A March 2027 release date is confident. Studios do not schedule risky projects for spring. Day Drinker is being positioned as an event, and Depp’s return to a major studio thriller after years away from Hollywood makes it one.
Watch the teaser once for the story, and twice for the mood. Depp’s face alone is worth it.
