Paramount just announced that Days Of Thunder 2 is officially happening with a June 2, 2028 release date, which means Cruise will be sixty-six when he slides back into the driver’s seat as Cole Trickle. Robert Duvall was fifty-nine when the original came out. Let that sink in for a moment.
Anne Hathaway has joined the cast, which immediately makes this sequel more interesting than it has any right to be. Hathaway and Cruise sharing the screen in a racing movie sounds like the kind of pairing that shouldn’t work but absolutely will. She’s an Oscar winner who can do literally anything. He’s a man who treats every movie like it’s a personal mission from God. Together, they’re going to make Days Of Thunder 2 either the most unexpectedly great sequel of the decade or the most gloriously unhinged. Either way, we’re winning.
The original Days Of Thunder came out in 1990 and was basically Top Gun with cars instead of jets. It was loud, it was ridiculous, and it made a surprising amount of money despite critics treating it like a personal insult. Cruise played Cole Trickle, a hotshot NASCAR driver with a name that sounds like a rejected superhero alias. The movie was pure Tony Scott energy: saturated colors, impossible stunts, and enough testosterone to fuel a small city. And now, nearly four decades later, they’re doing it again.
What’s genuinely wild is that Cruise is reportedly doing his own driving stunts again. At sixty-six. In a sport where actual professional drivers retire in their forties. The man has either discovered the fountain of youth or he’s simply too stubborn to acknowledge that human bodies have limits. My money is on stubbornness. Cruise has spent the last twenty years proving that age is just a number that he refuses to read, and Days Of Thunder 2 is his latest opportunity to make the rest of us feel bad about our fitness levels.
Paramount clearly believes in this project enough to give it a prime summer release slot. 2028 is still two years away, which means they have time to build something that honors the original while acknowledging that both Cruise and the audience have aged significantly since 1990. The question isn’t whether Days Of Thunder 2 will be good. The question is whether Tom Cruise can still sell the idea of a sixty-six-year-old man outracing professionals half his age. Based on his track record, the answer is probably yes.
He’s Tom Cruise. He doesn’t lose. He just finds new ways to make us believe the impossible. Days Of Thunder 2 might be the most absurd sequel announcement of the year, but it’s also the one I’m most curious to see. Because if anyone can make a thirty-eight-year-later racing sequel work, it’s the guy who just spent two hours in a biplane for our entertainment. Never count him out. Never count him out.
