Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale team up for Michael Mann’s Heat 2, the crime sequel 30 years in the making. Here’s what we know.

Heat 2 movie just became the most anticipated crime film of the decade, and we haven’t even seen a frame of footage yet. Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale have officially signed on to star in Michael Mann’s long-gestating sequel to his 1995 masterpiece, which means we are getting a crime saga with three Oscar winners and enough testosterone to power a small city.

The project has been Mann’s white whale since he published the novel Heat 2 in 2022 with co-author Meg Gardiner. That book functioned as both prequel and sequel, jumping between 1988 Chicago, the immediate aftermath of the 1995 film, and the year 2000. The film adaptation will reportedly shoot from September 2026 through March 2027 across multiple countries including Paraguay, Mexicali, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Batam.

Heat 2 Movie Production Journey Was Wilder Than the Plot

Heat 2 movie almost didn’t happen, which makes its current status even sweeter. Warner Bros. originally had the rights but exited in August 2025 after failing to settle on a budget with Mann. The director wanted $200 million for his vision; the studio balked. Enter Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists label, which swooped in October 2025 and beat out Paramount and Sony for the project. The budget landed at $150 million, with $37.2 million in California tax credits sweetening the deal.

The casting evolution has been equally dramatic. Adam Driver was originally in talks to play young Neil McCauley back in 2023. Austin Butler was rumored for Chris Shiherlis. But by late 2025, the landscape shifted. DiCaprio confirmed his involvement in December 2025, followed by Bale two months later. Bradley Cooper and Jason Clarke have also been linked to roles. The Playlist reported in June 2026 that Bale may actually be playing Vincent Hanna—the Al Pacino role—with Stephen Graham as Neil McCauley and Adam Driver as the villain. If true, this is less a sequel and more a full reimagining.

Mann, now 83, has confirmed he will shoot on celluloid film for the first time since Ali in 2001. He’s also eschewing de-aging technology, preferring CGI and makeup to bridge the timeline gaps. The man is making a $150 million crime epic with practical effects in an era of digital everything, and honestly, that’s exactly why he’s Michael Mann.

Heat 2 movie represents a dying breed: the adult-oriented studio blockbuster that isn’t based on a comic book or a toy line. It’s just cops and robbers, shot beautifully, performed by the best actors alive. DiCaprio and Bale have never shared the screen before, which means their first scene together will be an event unto itself. Two Method actors, one obsessive director, and the ghost of the greatest crime film ever made. What could possibly go wrong?

Heat 2 movie hits theaters in 2027, and you should probably clear your calendar now.
