Disney Subscriber Cancellation Exodus

The Disney subscriber cancellation numbers just dropped and they’re absolutely brutal. After Disney temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live following his controversial comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination, the entertainment giant hemorrhaged 1.7 million subscribers across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN in just one week.

Kimmel Controversy Fallout

The Jimmy Kimmel suspension lasted from September 17-23, 2025, after conservative critics and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr demanded action over Kimmel’s September 15 monologue. What started as political posturing by Sinclair and Nexstar station groups turned into Disney’s worst subscriber crisis in years.

NEW — I wrote about my confirmed scoop from last night that Disney hastened Kimmel's return because of a planned Disney+ streaming price increase announcement coming on Tuesday:

Disney subscriber cancellation rates spiked 436% above normal levels during that single week. Social media exploded with screenshots of people closing their accounts, using hashtags demanding Disney reinstate Kimmel. Even Hollywood celebrities like Tatiana Maslany and Damon Lindelof encouraged the boycott.

Financial Bloodbath

The math on these Disney subscriber cancellation figures is staggering. If those 1.7 million people were on the cheapest Disney+ tier at $10 monthly, Disney just kissed $17 million in guaranteed monthly revenue goodbye. But many subscribers likely had more expensive plans or bundles, making the actual loss even worse.

Disney’s stock took a beating too, with some estimates suggesting the company lost nearly $4 billion in market capitalization during the controversy. The timing couldn’t have been worse, coming right before Disney announced price increases for all streaming tiers starting October 21.

Station Standoff

Sinclair and Nexstar, controlling about 70 ABC affiliates nationwide, initially refused to air Kimmel’s show. Their decision left 25% of U.S. households without access to the program. But money talks louder than politics, and both companies eventually caved when they realized boycotting profitable content was stupid.

The Jimmy Kimmel suspension controversy highlighted the complex relationship between networks and local station owners. While consolidation has given groups like Nexstar significant power, they still depend on network content for viewers and advertising revenue.

Ratings Rollercoaster

When Kimmel returned September 23, his show attracted record ratings of 2.3 million viewers despite being unavailable in a quarter of the country. But the honeymoon didn’t last. By Thursday, viewership crashed 64% to just 865,000. The show lost 73% of its key 25-54 demographic and 73% of 18-49 viewers within 48 hours.

People protest at the El Capitan Entertainment Centre, where “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was recorded for broadcast, following his suspension for remarks he made regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination, on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, U.S. September 18, 2025.

Disney source confirmed to The Handbasket’s Marisa Kabas that the Disney subscriber cancellation numbers forced the company’s hand in reinstating Kimmel quickly. The entertainment giant reportedly rushed price increase announcements to soften the financial blow from lost subscribers.
