Dune Part Three trailer just dropped, and Timothée Chalamet looks like he has seen things no human should see. The first footage from Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy capper arrived March 17, 2026, after months of speculation, and it confirms what book readers have been dreading: Paul Atreides has fully embraced his role as Padishah Emperor, complete with a military buzz cut and the thousand-yard stare of a man who ordered a holy war that killed billions.
The trailer jumps forward seventeen years from Part Two, which is a significant departure from Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah novel—that story took place twelve years after Paul’s ascent. Villeneuve and co-writer Brian K. Vaughan expanded the timeline, presumably to give more weight to the physical and psychological toll of ruling an empire built on jihad. Dune Part Three trailer footage shows Paul washing his face in a basin, alone, the weight of his choices literally carved into his expression. This is not the boy who wandered into the desert looking for Fremen. This is a tyrant who knows he’s a tyrant and can’t stop himself.
The cast has expanded significantly. Robert Pattinson appears as Scytale, the Tleilaxu Face Dancer with shock-blonde hair and the unsettling energy of someone who could be anyone at any time. Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Alia Atreides, now grown and leading religious rites for pilgrims who worship her brother as a god. Jason Momoa is back as Duncan Idaho, or rather as Hayt—the ghola resurrected by Tleilaxu technology with all of Duncan’s memories but none of his emotional maturity. Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan has become Paul’s political wife, while Zendaya’s Chani appears battle-scarred in the desert, possibly fighting against the very empire she helped create.
Dune Part Three trailer also teases the conspiracy that drives the plot. The Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and the Tleilaxu have all turned against Paul, and the footage hints at palace intrigue that makes Game of Thrones look like a school board meeting. The visual scope is staggering—new planets, new environments, and that signature Villeneuve sand aesthetic that somehow makes desolation look beautiful.
What lands hardest is the emotional core. Dune Part Three trailer opens with a flashback to Paul and Chani discussing baby names—Ghanima for a girl, Leto for a boy—before cutting to the reality of their estrangement. The love story that anchored the first two films has curdled into tragedy, and you can feel it in every frame. This is a film about the cost of power, and the trailer makes clear that cost will be devastating.
Warner Bros. has locked in a December 18, 2026 release date, with IMAX 70mm screenings already selling out within minutes of ticket availability. The first round of IMAX tickets went on sale April 6, 2026, and vanished almost immediately. Dune Part Three trailer has accumulated views at a record pace, suggesting that audiences are ready for whatever Villeneuve has planned.
This is the end of the saga, at least for Villeneuve. He has stated repeatedly that this will be his final Dune film, that Messiah represents the conclusion of Paul Atreides’ story as he wants to tell it.
