Nearly three decades after Happy Gilmore first swung his way into comedy gold, Adam Sandler has delivered the streaming equivalent of a 400-yard drive straight into Netflix’s record books. The long-awaited sequel has obliterated Nielsen’s streaming charts with a jaw-dropping 2.9 billion viewing minutes in its opening weekend, proving that sometimes the best comebacks are worth the wait.

The Record-Breaking Numbers

This isn’t just another Netflix success story this is streaming dominance. The 2.9 billion minutes easily crushed the previous record held by Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which managed 2.2 billion minutes over an entire week. Happy managed this feat in just three days, translating to approximately 24.58 million complete viewings of the 114-minute film. To put this in perspective: if those were theatrical tickets at $18 each, we’d be looking at over $400 million in box office revenue.

Kyle Newacheck’s Directorial Home Run for Happy Gilmore 2

Director Kyle Newacheck, fresh off his collaboration with Sandler on Murder Mystery, understood the assignment perfectly. “I had to insert myself into the audience chair more than normal because I, too, am a fan of the first one,” Newacheck told UPI, adding that the original film is “a critical part of my comedic DNA”. The Workaholics alum watched the original when he was 12 and credits it with inspiring his filmmaking career.

Working with a $30 million budget for Happy Gilmore 2, Newacheck balanced nostalgia with fresh storytelling, bringing back original cast members Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald while introducing newcomers like Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) as Oscar Mejías, Happy’s charismatic new caddie.

Star Power That Actually Delivers

Happy Gilmore 2 succeeds because it respects both its legacy and audience intelligence. Adam Sandler’s return feels genuine rather than cash-grabby, with the plot centering on Happy’s quest to fund his daughter Vienna’s ballet school education. Bad Bunny surprised everyone with his acting chops, with Newacheck noting he “brought so much more than I expected” and possessed “a depth that was more than I expected”.

The celebrity cameo parade includes Eminem as “Donald Jr.” (son of the original’s “Jackass” heckler), Travis Kelce, Post Malone as DJ Omar Gosh, and professional golfers like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. These aren’t just throw-away appearances, they’re integrated into the story with genuine comedic purpose.

The Verdict

Tim Herlihy’s return as co-writer alongside Sandler ensures the sequel maintains the original’s spirit while Dennis Dugan’s involvement as executive producer provides continuity. With a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score and Metacritic’s 52/100 rating, critics remain divided, but audiences have spoken loudly with their viewing minutes.

Netflix’s acquisition through GKIDS and the film’s global success (46.7 million views worldwide in its opening weekend) proves that when done right, legacy sequels can recapture lightning in a bottle. Sometimes, the best things really are worth waiting 29 years for.
