Highlander Remake Cast Is Absolutely Stacked

Russell Crowe joins Henry Cavill in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander remake as the immortal mentor Ramirez. There can be only one—and it’s stacked.

Highlander remake cast just keeps getting more ridiculous, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Chad Stahelski, the man who turned John Wick into a global phenomenon, has assembled a sword-swinging ensemble so loaded with talent that the original 1986 film looks like a community theater production by comparison.

Henry Cavill leads as Connor MacLeod, the immortal Scottish warrior who discovers he can only die by beheading. Cavill has been attached since 2021, and his Instagram first-look photos from January 2026 show him wielding a hefty broadsword with the same intensity he brought to Geralt of Rivia. “If you thought you’d seen me do swordwork before, you haven’t seen anything yet,” he promised back in 2024, and based on the images, he wasn’t exaggerating.

Highlander Remake Cast Includes Oscar Winners and Action Legends

Highlander remake cast got its biggest boost when Russell Crowe signed on to play Ramirez, the Egyptian immortal mentor originally portrayed by Sean Connery. Crowe, who won an Oscar for Gladiator and knows his way around a sword, brings gravitas and star power to a role that requires both. He’s the Obi-Wan to Cavill’s Luke, if Obi-Wan could decapitate people and had a five-century head start on martial arts training.

Dave Bautista joins as The Kurgan, the savage immortal villain originally played by Clancy Brown. Bautista has spent his post-WWE career proving he’s one of Hollywood’s most versatile character actors, and playing a centuries-old warrior who enjoys murder feels like perfect casting. Karen Gillan, fresh off her Marvel run as Nebula, plays Heather, MacLeod’s mortal wife and the love of his life. Marisa Abela, who broke out in Industry, plays an immortal swordmaster. Djimon Hounsou adds his considerable presence in an undisclosed role. And Jeremy Irons reportedly plays a villain opposite Cavill, because when you need someone to sneer aristocratically while plotting murder, you call Jeremy Irons.

The production hasn’t been smooth. Cavill was injured during training prep in September 2025, pushing filming from late 2025 to early 2026. The project moved from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios under Scott Stuber’s United Artists banner, reportedly due to budget concerns. But Stahelski has remained committed throughout, describing the film as “John Wick with swords” and planning a potential trilogy if the first installment connects.

Stahelski’s vision expands the mythology significantly. The remake incorporates elements from the original film, the TV series, and various spinoffs, creating a prequel setup to “The Gathering” that gives room for future installments. The director has promised “insane” fight scenes that leverage Cavill’s Witcher training while adding new martial arts disciplines accumulated over 500 years of immortal life.

Highlander remake cast represents a deliberate strategy: mix established action stars with serious dramatic actors and rising talent. It’s the same approach that made John Wick’s ensemble so memorable—everyone from Keanu Reeves to Ian McShane to Lance Reddick brought something distinct. If Stahelski can replicate that chemistry with swords instead of guns, this could be the franchise reboot that finally gets Highlander right.

The original film spawned a cult following, several increasingly terrible sequels, and a TV series that outlasted them all. But it never broke through to mainstream blockbuster status. With this cast, this director, and Amazon’s backing, Highlander remake cast might finally prove that there can be only one—one great Highlander movie, that is.
