In a surprising revelation, director Ridley Scott has disclosed that Joaquin Phoenix grappled with portraying Napoleon Bonaparte’s titular character just two weeks before the commencement of principal photography.

Scott shared this insight in an interview with Empire, shedding light on the unique creative process behind their historical epic.

Scott divulged that Joaquin Phoenix, renowned for his method of acting, confronted uncertainties about embodying Napoleon’s role until the eleventh hour.

Scott recounted how Phoenix expressed his uncertainty, leading to intensive discussions and rehearsals. Over the course of ten days, the director and actor meticulously dissected the script, scene by scene, to crystallize the character’s essence.

Dual Focus: Gladiator 2 and Napoleon

While concurrently developing the much-anticipated sequel, Gladiator 2, Scott’s current focus is primarily on Napoleon’s production.

Gladiator 2, which follows in the footsteps of its acclaimed predecessor, has been temporarily halted due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

The production pause has reportedly affected a significant number of cast and crew members, prompting concerns about their livelihoods.

Challenges Amid Strike: Gladiator 2’s Hiatus

Sources reveal that Gladiator 2 encountered an unexpected halt during the filming of a major Colosseum action sequence as the SAG-AFTRA strike commenced.

This interruption has left over 300 individuals associated with the project facing uncertainty and financial strain. The suspension, which occurred amid rising anticipation for the sequel, has stirred emotions among the crew.

Joker: Folie à Deux Update

In contrast, Joaquin Phoenix’s other project, Joker: Folie à Deux, managed to conclude principal photography before the strike announcement.

Director Todd Phillips confirmed the completion of filming through a social media post. The Joker sequel remains on track for its October 2024 release, unaffected by the industry strike.

“Napoleon,” the result of Phoenix’s collaborative efforts with Ridley Scott, is set to grace cinemas on November 22, 2023.
