Jon Turteltaub confirmed the news during a live podcast recording in Philadelphia, and he did not mince words. It’s finally real.
The announcement carries weight because this project has been in development hell for nearly twenty years. Since Book of Secrets hit theaters in 2007, fans have been waiting for Benjamin Gates to solve another impossible riddle while dodging government agencies and looking dramatically at old maps. Turteltaub revealed that Disney has approved the script, which means National Treasure 3 has cleared the biggest hurdle in modern Hollywood.
Getting a studio to say yes is half the battle. Getting them to pay for it is the other half, and apparently Jerry Bruckheimer has already given his blessing as producer. The first two films made over $800 million combined, so the appetite is clearly there. Turteltaub even joked that if Cage gets hit by a bus, the movie dies, but if he gets hit by a bus, it probably still happens.
Cage is set to return as the history-obsessed treasure hunter, which is the only casting decision that actually matters. You can’t make National Treasure 3 without him.
