You’d think after not appearing in Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah novel, Rebecca Ferguson wouldn’t show up in the upcoming film adaptation. But director Denis Villeneuve had other plans. Ferguson confirmed her return as Lady Jessica for Dune 3, despite her character having basically no presence in the source material the film is adapting.

Ferguson’s Surprise Callback

When Ferguson initially realized her character wasn’t in the Dune: Messiah book, she assumed she was done with the franchise. “I wasn’t reckoning on it,” she revealed in interviews. But Villeneuve reached out directly. “Denis called me and was like, ‘Why do I have a feeling you think you’re not in the film?’ And I was like, ‘Because I’m not in the books?’ And he was like, ‘No, mate, I have a couple of scenes,'” Ferguson said, describing the director’s logic for keeping her involved despite the book’s storyline.

Ferguson actually loved her time on the Dune films. She previously told Newsweek that the role of Lady Jessica felt significant in the late ’90s when she first accepted it. “It was the 90s, and a lot of the women’s parts were not very interesting,” she explained. But Evy’s character—wait, that was a different franchise. Let me correct that. Lady Jessica was the confident, knowledgeable Bene Gesserit who could hold her own in any scene. Ferguson’s chemistry with the ensemble cast made those earlier films feel genuine and heartfelt.

The veteran actress has become the emotional anchor of the Dune universe. From her introduction in the first film to her pregnant reveal in Part Two, Lady Jessica matters to fans. Even if Villeneuve’s scripting means she’s just dipping in and out, her presence provides continuity that audiences will appreciate. Plus, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing her daughter Alia in Part Three, there’s actual family drama to explore. Ferguson shot her scenes in what sounds like a single day, but she walked away feeling connected to something epic. “I saw cinematographer Linus Sandgren and Denis, and Timothée was there,” she reflected. “It just rings close.”

Dune: Part Three releases December 18, 2026, and honestly, having Ferguson on set—even briefly—shows Villeneuve respects the character work that made the first two films resonate globally.
