Look, nobody asked for a Last Witch Hunter sequel, but here we are in 2025 and Lionsgate just said “hold my beer” and greenlit it anyway. Vin Diesel‘s returning as immortal witch hunter Kaulder, and somehow they’ve convinced 92-year-old Michael Caine to come out of retirement again to reprise his role as Dolan. Because apparently streaming numbers on Netflix can resurrect more than just witches.

Streaming Magic

The original 2015 film bombed harder than a failed spell, earning just $27 million domestically against its $90 million budget. But here’s where it gets interesting—the Last Witch Hunter sequel exists because the first movie became a sleeper hit on streaming platforms. Netflix reported it as one of their most-watched titles this year, proving that sometimes bad movies age like fine wine (or aged cheese, depending on your taste).

Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, couldn’t contain his excitement: “The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade.” Translation: people apparently love watching Vin Diesel fight CGI witches during their Netflix binges.

Caine’s Comeback for Last Witch Hunter sequel

Michael Caine officially retired in 2023 after The Great Escaper, but apparently friendship with Diesel is stronger than retirement plans. The Last Witch Hunter sequel will see Caine return as the priest who assists Diesel’s immortal warrior. At 92, Caine’s deal isn’t finalized yet, but come on—when has friendship ever let box office numbers get in the way?

The original film was based on Diesel’s actual Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, where he played a character called Melkor the Witch Hunter. Yes, you read that right—this franchise exists because Vin Diesel is a massive D&D nerd, and honestly, that’s kind of beautiful.

Fast Track Production

Lionsgate is fast-tracking the Last Witch Hunter sequel through development with Diesel’s One Race Films producing. No director is attached yet (Breck Eisner helmed the original), but with “advancements in filmmaking technology,” Fogelson promises they can “economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”

The sequel will continue exploring the world where witches secretly threaten humanity, and Kaulder stands as the last line of defense. Whether audiences want more supernatural Diesel action remains to be seen, but Netflix viewership suggests there’s an appetite for this particular brand of fantasy chaos.
