Pedro Pascal and Baby Yoda return to save Star Wars cinema. The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer finally dropped, and honestly? This might be exactly what Star Wars needed to redeem itself theatrically. After six years without a proper big-screen adventure, Jon Favreau’s bringing Din Djarin and his green son back to where the franchise belongs movie theaters.

Watch the brand new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu and experience it only in theaters May 22, 2026.

Visual Spectacle

The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer showcases everything fans love about the Disney+ series with appropriately cinematic scope. Mando and Grogu battle various evil robots and sci-fi beasts, blow up an AT-AT that dramatically tumbles down a mountainside, and face off against a Rancor-like creature in Rotta the Hutt’s arena. Because apparently, every Star Wars movie needs a monster pit scene.

The footage features appearances from beloved characters like Babu Frik from Rise of Skywalker and Zeb Orrelios from Rebels, proving Favreau understands the interconnected universe better than most recent filmmakers. The trailer balances familiar faces with new adventures, suggesting respectful expansion rather than desperate nostalgia.

New Cast Additions

Sigourney Weaver joins as Colonel Ward, a New Republic pilot who seems unimpressed with Grogu’s Force-powered snack theft attempts. The trailer shows Ward challenging Grogu to “step up his game,” suggesting the legendary actress understands the franchise’s playful tone while bringing gravitas to military leadership.

Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) appears as Rotta the Hutt—Jabba’s son—celebrating arena victories with typical Hutt enthusiasm. Din finds Rotta’s performance “impressive,” hinting at complex political relationships within the post-Empire galaxy. White’s casting suggests the film won’t shy away from the saga’s criminal underworld elements.

Jonny Coyne portrays an Imperial warlord, representing the scattered Empire remnants that our heroes must track down. The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer suggests these antagonists offer genuine threats rather than cartoon villainy.

Story Direction

Set after Return of the Jedi, the film follows Din Djarin’s recruitment by the New Republic to eliminate remaining Imperial warlords scattered across the galaxy. The official logline states: “As the nascent New Republic strives to safeguard the values for which the Rebellion stood, they have sought the assistance of the renowned Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu”.

The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer shows our protagonists working within larger galactic politics rather than operating as isolated bounty hunters. This shift allows exploration of the New Republic’s formation while maintaining the father-son dynamic that made the series compelling.

Production Pedigree

Jon Favreau directs from his screenplay co-written with Dave Filoni and George Lucas—yes, Lucas remains involved in Star Wars storytelling. This creative team understands what made the original trilogy magical while respecting the universe’s expanded mythology.

Favreau expressed enthusiasm about the transition: “I have cherished crafting narratives within the expansive universe that George Lucas envisioned. The opportunity to bring the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is incredibly thrilling”.

Kathleen Kennedy produces alongside Dave Filoni, ensuring continuity with the Disney+ series while scaling up for theatrical presentation.

Franchise Stakes

The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer represents Star Wars’ first theatrical release since 2019’s divisive Rise of Skywalker. The film carries enormous pressure to prove the franchise can still succeed cinematically after recent disappointments.

Early fan reactions show cautious optimism, though some complain the footage “looks like a TV show.” This criticism misses the point—The Mandalorian succeeded precisely because it felt more authentically Star Wars than recent films. Bringing that quality to theaters seems like smart strategy.

The May 22, 2026 release date provides ample time for post-production polish while building anticipation among audiences hungry for quality Star Wars content.
