Mikaela Hoover has voiced raccoons in Guardians of the Galaxy and now she’s voicing a reindeer who wants to be a doctor. This is called range, people. Hoover joins the One Piece universe as the English-language voice of Tony Tony Chopper, the blue-nosed reindeer-boy hybrid who becomes the Straw Hat Pirates’ doctor in Season 2.

And she’s not alone—seventeen actors worldwide are bringing Chopper to life in different languages, making this one of the most ambitious voice casting efforts in Netflix history.

Hoover describes Chopper as having “a huge heart” and “trying so hard to hide his emotions and put on a tough exterior, but underneath he’s a big softy, and his love can’t help but come out.” This is the essence of Chopper—a creature who ate the Human-Human Fruit, gained human intelligence and the ability to transform, but still struggles with self-worth and acceptance.

He’s a doctor who learned his craft from a witch doctor on Drum Island, and he joins the Straw Hats seeking a family that will appreciate him for who he is.

The global voice cast represents a commitment to authenticity that Netflix rarely attempts. In Japanese, Ikue Otani reprises her role from the anime—the voice that millions of fans already associate with Chopper. In Korean, Okjoo Jeong brings her own interpretation. In French, Meaghan Dendraël; in German, Martin Halm; in Italian, Valentina Favazza; in Brazilian Portuguese, Agatha Paulita; in Latin American Spanish, Nallely Solís—the list continues across seventeen languages and cultures.

Each actor brings something slightly different to the character while maintaining Chopper’s core innocence and determination.

Hoover’s casting is particularly interesting given her Marvel background. She played Floor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, one of the High Evolutionary’s animal experiments, so she’s literally voiced a genetically modified creature before. This experience probably helped her navigate Chopper’s specific vocal challenges—a reindeer who sounds young but knowledgeable, vulnerable but brave, animal but human.

Chopper’s introduction in Season 2 represents a major expansion of the One Piece world. He’s the first non-human crew member, the first doctor, and the first character with a truly tragic backstory involving medical experimentation and loss. The live-action adaptation uses CGI to bring Chopper to life, but it’s the voice performance that will make or break the character.

Based on early footage, Hoover has found the right balance—childlike wonder mixed with professional confidence, insecurity mixed with loyalty.

The global voice actor reveal video shows Hoover in the recording booth, headphones on, fully committed to making Chopper feel real. She’s working alongside the other Straw Hat actors—Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero (Usopp), Taz Skylar (Sanji)—who have established their own rhythm over two seasons. Integrating a new voice into this ensemble is tricky, but Hoover seems to have found her place in the crew.

For international audiences, having Chopper voiced in their native language is crucial. One Piece is a global phenomenon, and Netflix’s approach respects that diversity. Whether you’re watching in English, Japanese, Hindi, or Tamil, Chopper sounds like he belongs in your world. That’s the power of good voice casting—it dissolves the barrier between fiction and reality, making a blue-nosed reindeer doctor feel like someone you could know.
