Do you have that one movie franchise where everyone questions your taste but you couldn’t care less? For fighting game fans, it’s definitely Mortal Kombat. Yeah yeah, I’ve heard it all: “video game movies suck,” “the violence is gratuitous,” “it’s just button-mashing on screen.” Cool. And? I don’t care.

Mortal Kombat Returns to Theaters on October 24, 2025, with Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage and the bloodiest tournament format yet, and when that fatality music hits while someone’s spine gets ripped out, chef’s kiss.

The franchise has always been pure, unapologetic chaos wrapped in mystical nonsense, and the upcoming Mortal Kombat Returns to Theaters sequel doubles down on everything that made the 2021 reboot HBO Max’s most-streamed title that year. Director Simon McQuoid promises to “go bigger, go bolder, don’t hold back” with an expanded roster featuring Urban’s Hollywood washout Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph’s steel-fan-wielding Kitana, and Martyn Ford’s towering Shao Kahn.

The official trailer dropped July 16, 2025, showcasing the kind of over-the-top tournament spectacle that makes critics roll their eyes and fans lose their minds.

Mortal Kombat Returns to Theaters With The Ultimate Roster

Mortal Kombat Returns to Theaters assembles the most ambitious cast in franchise history, led by Karl Urban as Johnny Cage the fan-favorite Hollywood action star who injects meta-textual energy into the deadly competitions. The trailer reveals Urban starring in an in-universe film called “Uncaged Fury,” perfectly capturing the character’s ego-driven personality while setting up his recruitment into Earthrealm’s defense.

Returning champions include Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, Jessica McNamee’s Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin’s Liu Kang, and Mehcad Brooks’ cybernetically enhanced Jax, maintaining the core team that survived the 2021 tournament.

The newcomer additions address every complaint about the previous film’s scope limitations. Adeline Rudolph brings regal authority to Kitana, while Tati Gabrielle’s Jade serves as her loyal bodyguard and bo staff expert. Martyn Ford’s Shao Kahn provides the physical presence of Outworld’s tyrannical emperor, with Ana Thu Nguyen’s Queen Sindel and Desmond Chiam’s King Jerrod adding royal family dynamics to the mystical politics.

Even dead characters return through Netherrealm mythology Josh Lawson’s Kano and Max Huang’s Kung Lao are back via spiritual resurrection, because this is Mortal Kombat and death is just another gameplay mechanic.

Director McQuoid and franchise co-creator Ed Boon have promised a tournament with actual stakes and scorekeeping, featuring “huge consequences” for Earthrealm’s survival if the champions lose again. The film completed principal photography in January 2024 after production paused during the SAG-AFTRA strike, with Warner Bros. investing an estimated $80+ million budget and IMAX formatting to deliver the premium tournament experience fans have demanded since 1995.

So yeah, critics can keep complaining about scientific accuracy in a movie where people shoot ice balls and teleport through hell portals. The rest of us will be there opening night, watching Karl Urban deliver one-liners before someone gets their heart ripped out in 4K. Because sometimes you don’t need Shakespeare—sometimes you just need Shao Kahn yelling “Finish him!” while the bass drops and the fatality counter hits double digits.
