Just when you thought James Gunn couldn’t tease fans any harder, the DC Studios co-head casually drops a Peacemaker Season 3 bomb during a routine interview. While promoting the upcoming second season, Gunn basically confirmed that John Cena’s Christopher Smith will probably stick around for what he’s calling the “Tighty Whitey quadrilogy.” Because apparently, three seasons of a morally questionable superhero in underwear isn’t quite enough.
Gunn’s Tease
Speaking with ExtraTV, Gunn revealed the Peacemaker Season 3 possibility: “This is part of the Tighty Whitey trilogy. It’s known as that. Between The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker season 1, and Peacemaker season 2. Are we going to make it a quadrilogy? Probably. We’ll see.” That single word “probably” sent the DC fandom into overdrive faster than Peacemaker’s dad could say something racist.
The creator’s enthusiasm for extending the Peacemaker Season 3 storyline makes sense given the show’s success. Season 1 became HBO Max’s most-watched original series debut, while Season 2 premieres August 21, 2025, running through October 9. John Cena returns alongside Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, and Steve Agee, with new addition Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
DCU Integration
What makes Peacemaker Season 3 even more intriguing is its place within Gunn’s broader DC Universe plan. “Superman directly transitions into Peacemaker,” Gunn explained at the Season 2 premiere. “We are setting the stage for the rest of the DCU in season 2 of Peacemaker, which is incredibly crucial.” The show now serves as essential connective tissue between major DCU projects.
Cena echoed this sentiment: “Instead of having standalone narratives, the entire DCU is now interconnected. Season two continues to advance that storyline. The overarching DCU narrative takes the 11th Street Kids on their next journey.” This interconnectedness positions Peacemaker Season 3 as potentially crucial for future DCU developments.
Production Reality
While Gunn’s “probably” sounds encouraging, Peacemaker Season 3 faces practical challenges. As DC Studios co-head, Gunn juggles multiple projects including Superman sequels and other DCU properties. “Each time I reveal something, Peter Safran takes away another joint from my finger,” Gunn joked about premature announcements, suggesting concrete Peacemaker Season 3 details remain locked away.

The show’s adult-oriented content and R-rated humor provide creative freedom that distinguishes it from typical superhero fare. “I don’t believe there’s anything I’ve ever created that I cherish more than this season,” Gunn said about Season 2, indicating his emotional investment in continuing Christopher Smith’s journey beyond the currently confirmed episodes.
