Pendulum Poster Hints at a Sinister New-Age Retreat

Pendulum is making a very strange first impression, which is probably the point. The official poster for Mark Heyman’s upcoming horror thriller puts Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Phoebe Dynevor at the center of a story involving a remote retreat, spiritual practices and a secret that appears much worse than the wellness brochure promised.

The image leans into the movie’s uneasy mood instead of explaining everything. A pendulum hangs prominently in the design, while an upside-down figure and dark red tones suggest that this is not going to be the kind of retreat where you drink herbal tea, journal about your feelings and head home refreshed.

Pendulum follows married couple Patrick and Abigail, played by Gordon-Levitt and Dynevor, as they travel to a new-age retreat in New Mexico after a traumatic event. Patrick wants to help his wife, and he is willing to follow the retreat’s unusual methods if it means seeing her recover. His trust starts to disappear when he grows suspicious of the group’s mysterious leader, Ella Rose, played by Jacki Weaver.

That setup gives Pendulum a very different flavor from a standard haunted-house horror movie. There is no obvious old mansion, no family moving into a suspiciously cheap farmhouse and no reason to expect that the creepy thing lives behind a mirror. Instead, the danger appears to be hiding inside a place that is supposed to offer healing.

That is where the poster becomes more interesting. The pendulum itself suggests ritual, control and the kind of spiritual symbolism that can look comforting until the movie decides to turn it against you. The upside-down imagery also hints that Abigail’s experience may not be what Patrick thinks it is.

And then there is Jacki Weaver, who gets to play the person everyone should probably distrust immediately, even if the movie spends a while pretending otherwise. Weaver’s Ella Rose leads the retreat, and the story revolves around the question of whether her practices can actually help people or whether they are covering up something far more disturbing.

The cast gives Pendulum plenty of reasons to keep an eye on it. Norman Reedus is also part of the film, while the movie comes from Heyman, who writes and directs. Darren Aronofsky is producing through Protozoa Pictures, which adds another horror-minded name to a project already leaning heavily into paranoia and psychological tension.

Pendulum is also arriving right at the start of 2027, with a January 1 theatrical release planned in the United States. That date may sound like a strange place for a horror movie, but the timing could work in its favor if audiences want something darker after the holiday season finally stops pretending everything is cheerful.

The bigger question is what the title actually means once the film begins pulling apart Patrick and Abigail’s reality. Is the pendulum a literal object, a spiritual tool or just a visual clue to the movie’s obsession with control?

Pendulum is keeping that answer deliberately out of reach for now, and honestly, that is probably better than explaining the entire nightmare before the trailer even finishes.
