Shane Black’s latest crime caper Play Dirty storms onto Prime Video October 1, delivering the kind of gritty heist action that made Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys instant classics. Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield lead this adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s Parker novels, proving that sometimes the best partnerships are forged in criminal intent.

When Prime Video October Releases Get Serious About Crime
Based on Westlake’s beloved Parker book series (written under the pseudonym Richard Stark), Play Dirty follows expert thief Parker (Wahlberg) as he teams with the charismatic Grofield (Stanfield) for what the official logline describes as “the biggest heist of his life”. The film pits our antiheroes against both the New York mob and a South American dictator in what Prime Video October releases promise will be an action-packed thriller.

Director Shane Black brings his signature style to this $30 million production, co-writing the screenplay with Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi. The supporting cast includes Rosa Salazar as Zen, Tony Shalhoub, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, and Nat Wolff. Filmed primarily in Sydney Harbour and Australia’s Ku-ring-gai Council, the movie showcases Black’s knack for blending witty dialogue with explosive action sequences.
Production Behind the Madness
Amazon MGM Studios partnered with Team Downey for this Prime Video October exclusive, with Susan Downey and Marc Toberoff producing alongside Jules Day. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. was initially attached to star before Wahlberg stepped into Parker’s shoes. The 125-minute runtime (rated R) suggests Black isn’t holding back on the violence or language that made his earlier films cult favorites.

Principal photography began in March 2024, with composer Alan Silvestri crafting the score. The film represents Black’s return to the crime thriller genre after his brief superhero detour with Iron Man 3.
