Project Hail Mary has already travelled from a bestselling science-fiction novel to a major box-office hit. Now it has entered another debate: should a film about saving the Sun compete as a comedy?
Amazon MGM Studios has submitted Project Hail Mary in the musical or comedy categories for the 2027 Golden Globe Awards. The submission does not change the film itself. It changes the category in which the studio wants awards voters to consider it. That small administrative choice can make a big difference during awards season.
The film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. He slowly discovers that he has been sent on a mission to stop a mysterious substance from weakening the Sun. Earth is running out of time, and Grace has to use science, quick thinking and an unexpected friendship to find a solution.

That friendship is where much of the film’s humour comes from. Grace is not a fearless action hero. He panics, makes mistakes, talks to himself and reacts to terrifying situations with dry jokes. His connection with Rocky, an alien he meets in space, gives the story a warm and often funny centre.
Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel. Weir also wrote The Martian, another science-fiction story built around a stranded man using science to stay alive. The Martian received a similar Golden Globes classification when it competed in the musical or comedy field. That earlier decision makes the comparison easy to understand, even though the two films have their own styles.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the adaptation, while Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay. The directing pair are known for mixing fast humour with large-scale stories, including The Lego Movie and the Spider-Verse films. Their approach helps explain why Project Hail Mary can move between tense space problems and funny character moments without feeling like two separate films.
The category choice has triggered the familiar argument over what counts as a comedy. Some viewers see the film as science fiction first, with jokes added to a serious survival story. Others point out that its humour is central to the way Grace handles fear and builds trust with Rocky. Both readings can be true. A film does not need to be a nonstop comedy to have a comic identity.

The Golden Globes also separate films into drama and musical or comedy races, so category placement affects the competition a movie faces. The 2027 nominations are scheduled for December 7, with the ceremony set for January 10. Project Hail Mary has been submitted, but a submission is not the same as a nomination.
The Globes have used this split for decades, and genre placement has often become part of the campaign conversation. A comedy submission can shape a film’s awards path, but it cannot decide how audiences should describe the movie.

For now, the debate may help keep the film in awards conversations. Its strongest case is not that it makes space travel look funny. It is that it finds humour, kindness and human connection in a story where the stakes could not be higher.
