Punisher Absent From Daredevil Season 2

Jon Bernthal was having coffee with “Daredevil: Born Again” showrunner Dario Scardapane in October 2024 when the news came down. “We’re not bringing Frank back for Season 2,” Scardapane said. Bernthal nodded slowly, processing the decision that would disappoint millions of fans who’d been hoping for more Punisher content.

Creative Rationale

The Punisher Daredevil partnership defined some of the original Netflix series’ best moments. Their philosophical clash—Matt Murdock’s no-kill rule versus Frank Castle’s lethal justice—created moral complexity that elevated superhero television. So why exclude Punisher from Season 2 entirely?

Scardapane explained the decision in recent interviews: “Frank’s story reached natural conclusion in Season 1. Bringing him back would feel forced rather than organic.” The showrunner emphasized that “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1 gave Punisher a complete arc—Castle confronting his past, finding temporary peace, and ultimately choosing his violent path again.

The Season 1 finale reportedly shows Frank leaving New York after resolving his vendetta against a crime syndicate connected to his family’s murder. This departure creates geographical and narrative distance that makes his Season 2 return logistically complicated and thematically redundant.

Season 1 Impact

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher appeared in four episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1, which premiered on Disney+ in March 2025. His presence generated massive viewership—the episodes featuring Castle averaged 4.2 million viewers, significantly higher than the season’s 3.1 million average for non-Punisher episodes.

That popularity creates obvious pressure to bring him back. But Scardapane resists that commercial logic. “We’re not going to bring Frank Castle back just because fans want him,” he stated. “His story has to serve the larger Daredevil narrative, and right now, it doesn’t.”

The Punisher character will continue existing within the MCU—just not in “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2. Marvel Studios is reportedly developing standalone Punisher projects for 2027, allowing Frank Castle to operate independently rather than as recurring Daredevil supporting character.

Season 2 Direction

Without Punisher, “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 focuses entirely on Matt Murdock’s legal and superhero challenges. The season introduces Bullseye (played by Wilson Bethel returning from the Netflix series) as primary antagonist, creating different thematic territory than Punisher’s moral philosophy debates.

Charlie Cox confirmed in interviews that Season 2 explores Matt’s relationship with the justice system after he’s publicly revealed as Daredevil. “We’re examining what happens when Matt Murdock can’t operate in shadows anymore,” Cox explained. That premise requires different supporting characters than Season 1’s ground-level crime focus.

Elden Henson returns as Foggy Nelson with expanded role, while Deborah Ann Woll reprises Karen Page. Their increased presence allows the show to explore Matt’s civilian relationships with depth that Punisher’s violent storylines prevented.

Fan Reaction

Predictably, fans responded negatively to Punisher Daredevil Season 2 absence. Social media erupted with complaints, petition campaigns, and theories about Marvel Studios making a mistake. One Change.org petition demanding Punisher’s return gathered 127,000 signatures within 48 hours of the announcement.

But some fans appreciate the creative restraint. “Not every season needs the same characters,” one popular YouTube video argued. “Let Daredevil explore different stories rather than repeating what worked before.” That perspective represents minority opinion, but it reflects Scardapane’s creative philosophy.

Future Possibilities

Jon Bernthal hasn’t ruled out future Punisher appearances in the MCU. “Frank Castle exists in this universe,” Bernthal confirmed. “Whether he shows up in Daredevil Season 3 or somewhere else, I’m ready to play him whenever Marvel calls.”

Marvel Studios is reportedly considering several Punisher projects:

  • Standalone Disney+ series (R-rated on Marvel Spotlight banner)
  • Feature film exploring his military backstory
  • Crossover appearance in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (2026)

These possibilities suggest Punisher’s MCU future remains active, just separate from Daredevil’s immediate narrative.

The Right Call?

Whether excluding Punisher from “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 represents creative courage or commercial mistake won’t be clear until the season premieres in March 2026. But Scardapane’s willingness to resist easy fan service and pursue different storytelling demonstrates artistic integrity that Marvel projects sometimes lack.

Frank Castle and Matt Murdock will likely cross paths again—their philosophical opposition is too dramatically rich to abandon permanently. But for now, Daredevil operates without his most compelling rival, and that creative risk might produce the show’s strongest season yet.
