Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back as the Owens sisters, and their Practical Magic 2 reunion is doing exactly what a sequel reunion should do: giving people a reason to care before the witches even start throwing spells.

The pair return as Sally and Gillian Owens, the sisters at the center of the 1998 cult favorite. This time, they are joined by a younger cast that includes Joey King and Maisie Williams, while Susanne Bier takes over directing duties.

But the biggest draw is still Bullock and Kidman.

Their recent press appearances have brought the pair back into the spotlight together, with interviews and premiere moments that feel less like routine promotion and more like two longtime collaborators picking up an old rhythm.

The two actresses have spent the sequel’s press run trading jokes, teasing each other and leaning into the affectionate chaos that made their original pairing work. Their chemistry has naturally become one of the talking points around Practical Magic 2, especially after joint interviews and premiere appearances put the two back in the same frame.

That is not hard to understand. Bullock brings the dry, grounded energy. Kidman is pure theatrical witchy nonsense when the moment calls for it. Put them together and the conversation basically writes itself.

The movie itself gives them plenty to work with. Practical Magic 2 brings Sally and Gillian back to their family’s magical world as they face another threat tied to the Owens bloodline. The sequel draws from Alice Hoffman’s wider story, with the returning sisters once again at the center of the chaos.

And the production clearly knows nostalgia is doing some of the heavy lifting.

One of the most striking examples is the recreation of the Owens sisters’ famous house. The original structure from the 1998 film had been dismantled, so the sequel’s crew rebuilt it from the ground up. Bullock has spoken emotionally about seeing the new version come together, which tells you how much that location still matters to the cast and the audience.

The new movie also brings back Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, while adding new faces to the Owens family story. That balance gives Practical Magic 2 a tricky job. It has to feel familiar without becoming a two-hour museum tour of the first movie.

So far, Bullock and Kidman seem to be the safest bet. Their screen partnership remains the easiest part of the original movie to sell again.

Their friendship and comic rhythm remain the easiest part of the original magic to recreate. The question is whether the sequel can build a story around that chemistry rather than simply pointing at it and saying, “Remember them?”

Seeing Bullock back in a major release also gives the sequel a little extra weight after several years away from the big screen. For longtime viewers, that may matter more than another giant spell or flashy effect.
