Just when you thought Hollywood had run out of ways to milk childhood nostalgia, Nintendo drops Super Mario Galaxy Movie announcement during their 40th anniversary celebration. Because apparently, sending Chris Pratt’s Mario to outer space is exactly what 2026 needs. The April 3 release promises to boldly go where no plumber has gone before—well, except in the 2007 Wii game this sequel is named after.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back the entire voice cast from 2023’s billion-dollar blockbuster: Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek). Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return with screenwriter Matthew Fogel for Universal Pictures and Illumination.

“What kinds of adventures do you think Mario and his friends will have in space?” producer Shigeru Miyamoto asked during Friday’s Nintendo Direct presentation. The brief teaser showed Mario napping under a tree before the camera swooped skyward, offering glimpses of Luma and Princess Peach’s castle—clear nods to the 2007 game’s cosmic storytelling.

Anniversary Timing

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie announcement coincides perfectly with Super Mario Bros’ 40th anniversary on September 13, making this the centerpiece of Nintendo’s year-long celebration. “This movie will be the main event of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ 40th anniversary,” Miyamoto confirmed, positioning the film as both nostalgic tribute and franchise expansion.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri noted that “while the ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era.” The original film’s $1.36 billion worldwide gross proved that audiences hunger for Nintendo’s brand of family-friendly adventure, setting sky-high expectations for the space-bound sequel.

Franchise Future

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie represents Nintendo’s commitment to cinematic universe building, with a Legend of Zelda film already announced for March 2027. Jack Black previously expressed interest in Pedro Pascal voicing Wario, while the original film’s post-credits scene strongly hinted at Yoshi’s involvement in future installments.

Brian Tyler returns to compose the score, crucial for adapting Koji Kondo’s beloved Galaxy soundtrack for theatrical presentation. “If they nail the music from Galaxy, this might end up the most beautiful video game movie ever,” one fan predicted on social media, highlighting the pressure to honor the game’s acclaimed orchestral compositions.

Co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie filming began with storyboarding and design work already underway. The April 3, 2026 U.S. release (April 24 in Japan) positions it perfectly for spring family entertainment, avoiding summer blockbuster competition while maximizing Nintendo’s anniversary momentum.

Whether Pratt’s Mario can successfully transition from Mushroom Kingdom plumbing to intergalactic heroics remains the billion-dollar question facing this cosmic adventure.
