Leave it to James Gunn to take the most iconic superhero rivalry and turn it completely upside down. Superman Man of Tomorrow drops July 9, 2027, featuring our Man of Steel teaming up with his greatest enemy to face an even bigger threat. Because apparently, when you’ve got problems so massive that even Lex Luthor looks reasonable, you know humanity’s in serious trouble.

Enemy Alliance

“It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn revealed on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show. The Superman Man of Tomorrow plot positions Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor as co-protagonist rather than traditional antagonist, creating what Gunn calls “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”

Filming begins April 2026 with David Corenswet returning as the Last Son of Krypton. Gunn’s enthusiasm for the project shows: “I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

Bigger Threats

The Superman Man of Tomorrow mystery centers on exactly what threat could be serious enough to unite these archenemies. Fan speculation points toward Brainiac, Darkseid, or General Zod as potential candidates for the “much, much bigger threat” Gunn mentioned.

“And it’s more complicated than that,” Gunn teased, suggesting layers of character development beyond simple team-up mechanics. The sequel’s two-year turnaround from the original Superman demonstrates Gunn’s confidence in his DC Universe vision and clear storytelling direction.

Gunn Universe

The Superman Man of Tomorrow announcement comes as Gunn’s DCU continues expanding with Supergirl and Clayface arriving in 2026. Gunn praised Supergirl star Milly Alcock as potentially “the best casting I’ve done in my entire life. She is remarkable in the film.”

Warner Bros’ July 9, 2027 release date positions the sequel perfectly in summer blockbuster season. The Superman Man of Tomorrow concept represents Gunn’s commitment to character-driven storytelling over traditional superhero formula, promising depth and complexity that could redefine how audiences view the Superman-Lex relationship.

Produced by Gunn for DC Studios and Warner Bros Pictures, the film continues building the interconnected universe that began with this year’s Superman. With T-Street Pictures and additional backing secured, the Superman Man of Tomorrow production represents significant studio investment in Gunn’s long-term DCU strategy.
