The Conjuring movies have always been an anomalous form of blockbuster horror films- movies that unfold like high-falutin dramas with a paranormal twist. Unlike most horror movies, they have revolved around the lead characters Edward Warren and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), who are not heroes or killers on the prowl but a married couple of paranormal inquisitors who face the unknown and have to reconcile religion, science, and the shocks of encountering the inexplicable and surviving it.
Though a decade later, the fourth and final chapter in that saga The Conjuring: Last Rites, has been announced, as the series closer by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. The important names that must be mentioned as the points of continuity are not the reinvention instead. Michael Chaves returns in the role of the director after The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) and The Nun II (2023).
This time round, I have a different screenwriter, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote The Conjuring 2.
James Wan and Peter Safran, the two who have produced the universe since inception, also return as producers. And as always the Warrens are Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga-who perhaps are the unifying factor in this vast, connected universe. They made their movies more than simple tales of scary ghosts and made it a series that earned more than $2 billion worldwide and became the most successful horror franchise of all time.
Not much is known about the plot details but the subtitle Last Rites makes its place evident as it is supposed to be the end.
It is not altogether clear whether it puts an end to the story of the Warrens or just pulls a curtain on the larger Conjuring Universe, to which spin-offs such as Annabelle, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona belong. Warner Bros. has officially set the film onto a theatrical release, giving it a date of September 5, 2025, which at the very least lands it in the middle of the fall horror season.
