Christopher Nolan knows how to draw a crowd, but “The Odyssey” might be his most ambitious gamble yet. This Greek epic, budgeted near $180 million, dropped its first-look images this week and it’s hard to miss Tom Holland’s rugged makeover standing beside Anne Hathaway’s steely Penelope and Mia Goth’s mysterious Athena.
New Heroes
In “The Odyssey,” Tom Holland plays Odysseus, a role that required five months of sword-fight and boat navigation training. Anne Hathaway, who reteams with Nolan for the third time, transformed herself for Penelope by learning ancient dialects and intricate weaving (yes, literally weaving for the camera). Mia Goth brings her trademark eerie intensity as Athena, with insiders hinting that her role is one of the script’s biggest twists.
Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is more than just mythology, it’s a star showcase. The supporting cast is stacked: Oscar Isaac as Zeus, Austin Butler as Achilles, and rising star Damson Idris as Telemachus. Over 700 extras filmed the legendary Trojan Horse sequence on a custom-built Greek shoreline.
Modern Take
Nolan’s film attacks modern issues through ancient myth. The screenplay updates Homer’s war themes with nods to PTSD, displacement, and fractured families—making it eerily relevant. Unlike “Oppenheimer,” which clocked in at 3 hours, “The Odyssey” reportedly comes in at 2 hours, 30 minutes of non-stop drama.
Nolan said he wants to “capture the messy heroics, but also the loss, fear, and even black comedy.” Expect plenty of practical effects: those shipwrecks and monster attacks are being crafted with real water, pyrotechnics, and monster suits courtesy of effects legend Neal Scanlan.
Release and Buzz
Set for a July 2026 release, “The Odyssey” will be Nolan’s 12th feature. Warner Bros. expects a global haul of $800 million, especially riding the post-“Oppenheimer” and “Dune: Part Two” hype. The script has already made the 2025 Black List, and early screenings for test audiences scored a massive 91% favorable response.
Insider secret? Nolan’s already approached Cate Blanchett for a surprise goddess cameo—and rumors swirl she said yes.
