Tom Holland confirms his next project is a Fred Astaire biopic directed by Paddington filmmaker Paul King for Sony Pictures. Start dancing.
Tom Holland has spent his summer swinging through New York as Spider-Man and sailing ancient seas in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, but his next move might be his most impressive stunt yet. The actor confirmed in a July 2026 interview with Good Morning America that he will star as legendary dancer Fred Astaire in a biopic for Sony Pictures, and he has already started training.
Paul King, the director behind the Paddington films and Wonka, is helming the project, which centers on the relationship between Astaire and his sister Adele. The two were inseparable for more than twenty years, moving from a simple Midwestern vaudeville act to Broadway and London’s West End in the 1920s. Adele was initially the bigger star, but Fred’s consummate skills eventually eclipsed hers, and the duo parted in 1932 when she married Lord Charles Cavendish. That breakup sent Fred toward Hollywood and cinematic immortality.
Lee Hall, who wrote Billy Elliot and Rocketman, is currently rewriting the script by Noah Pink. The project marks a reunion of sorts for Hall and Holland, who got his career breakthrough playing the title role in Billy Elliot: The Musical on the West End from 2008 to 2010. So yes, Tom Holland can actually dance, and he learned from the same choreographic tradition that produced Astaire’s precision and grace.

Sony is keeping specific plot details under wraps, but the focus on the Astaire siblings suggests a story about partnership, sacrifice, and the pain of watching someone you love step out of your shared spotlight. It is basically the emotional core of La La Land, but with actual tap shoes and a historical basis instead of Ryan Gosling pretending he can play jazz piano.
Tom Holland told Good Morning America that he has already started dance training, which means he is currently learning to move like Astaire while recovering from playing Spider-Man and a Greek warrior in the same calendar year. Holland has been nonstop for three years straight, jumping from Uncharted to Spider-Man to The Crowded Room to Nolan’s epic and back to Spider-Man again. Choosing a dance biopic as his next project shows serious range and a desire to prove he is more than just a web-slinger.
If he can capture even a fraction of Astaire’s effortless elegance, we might be looking at the performance that finally separates the boy from the franchise. The film has no confirmed release date yet, but with King wrapping post-production on his schedule and Holland already in training, expect to see Tom Holland gliding across screens in top hat and tails sooner rather than later.
