Sometimes Hollywood gets so obsessed with biopics that they’ll literally turn anything into a movie. Case in point: Waltzing with Brando hits theaters September 19, 2025, and it’s about Marlon Brando hiring an architect to build the world’s first eco-friendly retreat on a tiny Tahitian island. Because apparently, we needed a movie about sustainable architecture starring the guy from Titanic.

Method Madness
Director Bill Fishman (Tapeheads) adapted Bernard Judge’s 2011 memoir about his wild experience working with Brando in the late 1960s. The Waltzing with Brando project started as an architectural experiment and became what Judge described as “an eccentric and emotional journey into isolation, celebrity, and the limits of utopian idealism.”

Billy Zane produces and stars as Brando, working alongside Jon Heder as Judge, plus Richard Dreyfuss, Tia Carrere, and Rob Corddry. Filming took place primarily on Tetiaroa, the actual island where Brando and Judge attempted their sustainable paradise project.
Eco Warrior
What makes Waltzing with Brando fascinating isn’t just the celebrity angle, it’s how ahead of his time Brando was environmentally. “Brando’s ambition to create an eco-friendly retreat was well ahead of its era,” executive producer Dean Bloxom explained. The actor’s vision for Tetiaroa included solar power, wind energy, and sustainable architecture decades before it became trendy.
Zane spent months preparing for the role, noting in 2019 interviews that he “wasn’t previously aware of his passion for environmental rights, which was so prescient and so timely.” The actor wanted to “celebrate the man for being a forward-thinker” while still mining the dramatic potential of Brando’s complex personality.
Island Life
The Waltzing with Brando production embraced authenticity by filming on location at Tetiaroa, where cast and crew experienced the same isolation and challenges that shaped the original story. The film explores how Judge’s practical architectural training clashed with Brando’s grandiose environmental dreams.
Iconic Releasing’s Mark R. praised the project as “one of those exceptional projects—recognized by the Academy, steeped in Hollywood history, and featuring a compelling performance from Billy Zane.” VMI Worldwide’s Fisher noted the “undeniable allure surrounding Brando globally,” emphasizing how the film shows him “through such an unexpected and intimate lens.”
The film had its world premiere as closing night selection at 2024’s Torino Film Festival, with Iconic Releasing handling North American distribution. Executive producers include Zane’s Billy Zane Productions, along with Deano Productions and Fallout Entertainment.
