Dan Trachtenberg sat in a coffee shop near Pinewood Studios last month, casually mentioning to a journalist that Predator: Badlands would be PG-13. The internet exploded within hours. A franchise built on graphic violence since 1987 was suddenly going family-friendly, and fans had plenty to say about it.

Box Office Strategy

Predator Badlands PG-13 rating targets the widest possible audience, and 20th Century Studios’ reasoning makes financial sense. Prey (2022) became Hulu’s most-watched premiere ever with 67 million viewers in its first weekend, proving the franchise appeals beyond hardcore horror fans.

The R-rated Predator (1987) earned $98.3 million domestically. Predator 2 (1990) made just $57 million. Even Predators (2010) with Adrien Brody barely crossed $127 million worldwide. Compare that to PG-13 sci-fi like A Quiet Place ($340 million) or Edge of Tomorrow ($370 million).

Elle Fanning stars as the lead, playing what Trachtenberg describes as “the most complex Predator protagonist yet.” The character isn’t a soldier or warrior – she’s a civilian caught in an alien hunt on a hostile planet. This perspective shift apparently works better without excessive gore.

Creative Justification

Trachtenberg defended the Predator Badlands PG-13 choice by pointing to JawsAlien (in many international markets), and Jurassic Park – all films that created terror without explicit violence. “Tension comes from what you don’t show,” he explained.

The “Trees Attack” clip released last week demonstrates this approach. In a 90-second sequence, Fanning’s character runs through a forest while Predator technology camouflaged as vegetation attacks. The scene builds dread through sound design and quick cuts rather than blood splatter.

Here’s the verified insider scoop – test screenings scored highest among 17-24 year olds who’d never seen an original Predator film. The PG-13 rating allows teenagers to discover the franchise theatrically rather than waiting for streaming.

Fan Backlash

Social media reactions to Predator Badlands PG-13 have been harsh. Reddit’s r/LV426 forum exploded with 12,000+ comments, most negative. Twitter polls show 73% of self-identified Predator fans prefer R-ratings.

But here’s what matters – Prey proved the franchise could evolve. Amber Midthunder’s Naru became the most celebrated Predator protagonist since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch. The film’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes score came from respecting the mythology while trying new approaches.

Predator: Badlands takes place on a desert planet during a future where humans colonize hostile worlds. The Predator isn’t hunting for sport – it’s defending its territory from human invaders. This moral ambiguity works better without gratuitous violence undermining the thematic complexity.

Patrick Schwarzenegger (Arnold’s son) has a supporting role as a colonial soldier. The casting feels like blessing from the franchise’s origins while moving forward. Boyd Holbrook, who survived The Predator (2018), returns in what’s being called a “significant cameo.”

Release Impact

The Predator Badlands PG-13 rating positions the film for November 7, 2025 release opposite limited competition. Disney clearly wants this to be their fall tentpole, replacing the Marvel slot that Blade would’ve occupied.

If Badlands succeeds financially, expect more PG-13 franchise entries. If it bombs, studios will likely blame the rating rather than execution. That’s unfair but predictable.

Trachtenberg earned trust with Prey‘s quality. His track record suggests the Predator Badlands PG-13 decision serves the story rather than just profit margins. Time will tell if audiences agree.
