META: Will Ferrell golf comedy The Hawk reunites him with Molly Shannon for chaotic PGA tour comeback. Streaming July 16.

Will Ferrell golf comedy energy is back, and it’s somehow even more chaotic than his NASCAR movie. The Hawk, coming to Netflix July 16, stars Ferrell as Lonnie Hawkins, a disgraced former golf champion attempting the most ridiculous comeback in sports history. If you thought Talladega Nights was excessive, wait until you see Ferrell swinging clubs and his dignity simultaneously.

The teaser trailer dropped in May 2026, and it immediately establishes the tone: Ferrell’s Hawkins was once great, then fell hard, and now believes he can return to glory despite being objectively terrible at this point. Molly Shannon co-stars, reuniting with her Saturday Night Live partner for what appears to be a masterclass in comedic desperation. Jimmy Tatro rounds out the main cast, presumably playing the young hotshot who can’t believe he’s losing to this disaster of a man.

Will Ferrell Golf Chaos Behind the Scenes

Will Ferrell golf series marks his first major Netflix comedy since the platform became his home for unhinged character studies. The show appears to follow the classic Ferrell formula: take a profession, insert a man with too much confidence and too little self-awareness, watch the explosions. But golf adds a particular layer of pain because it’s a sport that humiliates everyone equally, regardless of talent.

The teaser highlights Hawkins’ “challenging journey” back to championship form, which apparently involves public meltdowns, questionable coaching decisions, and the kind of wardrobe choices that suggest he’s lost all touch with reality. Ferrell in golf pants is already funny. Ferrell in golf pants having an existential crisis on the green is comedy gold.

What separates Will Ferrell golf comedy from his previous sports parodies is the television format. Eight episodes means more time to explore Hawkins’ delusions, his relationships, and the specific agony of a sport where you mostly just walk around angry. The PGA tour setting allows for cameos from actual golfers who can react to Ferrell’s nonsense with genuine confusion.

Will Ferrell golf show premieres July 16 on Netflix. If you’ve ever thrown a club in anger or laughed at someone who did, this is mandatory viewing.
