It’s happening. After years of waiting, 24 Jump Street finally has a release date. Sony has confirmed that Jenko and Schmidt are coming back on December 10, 2027. That’s a long way away. But it’s real. That’s more than we’ve had for a decade.
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both returning. Ice Cube is coming back as Captain Dickson. The band is getting back together. 24 Jump Street has been in development hell since 22 Jump Street came out in 2014. There were spin-offs. There were crossovers with Men in Black. There were rumors that the franchise was dead. Now it’s alive. 24 Jump Street is happening.
Rodney Rothman is directing. He co-wrote Into the Spider-Verse and directed the Jump Street spin-off idea that never got made. He knows the franchise. He understands the meta-humor that made the first two movies work. 24 Jump Street is in good hands.
The first two movies made $331 million combined on tiny budgets. They were massive hits. They were also genuinely funny, which is rare for a comedy sequel. 21 Jump Street was a surprise. 22 Jump Street was even better. The bar for 24 Jump Street is high. It’s been over a decade. The audience is older. The jokes have to land differently.
Tatum and Hill have both said they’re excited to come back. They’ve also said they’re nervous. That’s a good sign. Comedians who aren’t nervous are usually making bad movies. 24 Jump Street needs to justify its existence. It can’t just be a nostalgia play. It has to be funny.
The December 10 release date puts it in prime awards-season real estate. That’s usually for serious movies. But 24 Jump Street is counterprogramming. It’s the movie you see when you need a break from the prestige dramas. That’s a smart slot. It worked for the first two. It’ll work for 24 Jump Street.
The question is whether the magic is still there. Tatum and Hill have both had huge careers since 22 Jump Street. They’re not the same people. The characters aren’t the same people either. 24 Jump Street is going to have to address that. The best comedy sequels do. They grow with the characters.
December 10, 2027 is the date. Mark your calendar. 24 Jump Street is coming. It took forever. But it’s coming.
