Andrew Garfield just crushed every fan’s hope of seeing Eduardo Saverin flip out over flip-flops again. When asked about The Social Network sequel at the New York Film Festival, Garfield’s response was brutally simple: “No, no. Eduardo is in Singapore having a good time”.

Singapore Life Wins

Andrew Garfield Social Network fans need to accept that their favorite Facebook co-founder is done with drama. The actor made it clear he won’t be reprising his role in The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up scheduled for October 9, 2026.

Garfield’s reasoning makes perfect sense though. After Eduardo Saverin renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2011 and moved to Singapore, he co-founded B Capital and became the wealthiest person in the country. Why would he want to relive Facebook’s toxic origin story?

New Faces, Same Drama

Sony Pictures is moving forward with Jeremy Strong taking over Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg. The Social Network sequel will focus on whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz (Jeremy Allen White).

Sorkin revealed his motivation for the sequel during a podcast last year: “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible”. The screenplay dives into “The Facebook Files” – those damning 2021 articles that exposed Facebook’s internal chaos.

Original Cast Exodus

None of the original Social Network cast is returning, which honestly feels appropriate for a story about people who can’t stand each other. Garfield did admit he’s excited to watch the new film, telling IndieWire “Oh yeah” when asked if he’d see it.

David Fincher won’t be directing this time either. Sorkin’s handling both writing and directing duties, which could either be brilliant or catastrophic. Given that Sorkin wrote the Oscar-winning original, he’s earned the benefit of the doubt.

Facebook’s Reckoning

The Social Reckoning promises to examine how Facebook impacted teenagers, spread misinformation, and basically broke democracy. It’s based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation that revealed the platform’s role in real-world violence and social division.

The timing couldn’t be better. With social media under intense scrutiny and everyone finally admitting these platforms might be destroying society, a Social Network sequel feels necessary.
