James Cameron’s Avatar Fire and Ash is dropping December 19, 2025, and the director’s basically treating it like his personal Christmas gift to movie theaters. After spending seven years and probably Pandora’s GDP on this third installment, Cameron’s promising something that’ll make Avatar Fire and Ash the most emotionally devastating space opera ever filmed.

Ash People Problems

The story picks up one year after Avatar: The Way of Water, with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) dealing with grief while facing a new threat. Enter the Ash People, led by Varang (Oona Chaplin), who’ve basically rejected everything Na’vi about being Na’vi after a volcano destroyed their homeland.

Cameron revealed his approach to these new antagonists: “We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm”. Translation: even blue aliens can be complicated jerks sometimes.

Wind Traders and Sky Drama

Avatar Fire and Ash also introduces the Wind Traders, nomadic Na’vi who sail the skies like some kind of alien pirates. Cameron described them as “equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages”. Because apparently, even on Pandora, someone needs to handle logistics.

David Thewlis plays Peylak, leader of these sky sailors, while the returning cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet. The film also welcomes back Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, and Bailey Bass as the Sully kids.

Cameron’s Rollercoaster

During a D23 livestream from New Zealand, Cameron couldn’t hide his excitement about the post-production process. “It’s like Christmas morning every morning when I see the shots that were rendered the night before,” he gushed. The man’s been working on this film for almost four years, and he’s still getting emotional about CGI Na’vi.

Sam Worthington and the cast have been equally vocal about the film’s emotional impact. Cameron’s wife reportedly cried for four hours after viewing it. If that doesn’t scream “bring tissues,” nothing will.

Avatar Fire and Ash will run longer than The Way of Water’s 3 hours 12 minutes, so clear your schedules and maybe your bladders. Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Studios are distributing this epic, which wrapped principal photography back in December 2020.

Release: December 19, 2025
