Matchbox The Movie is exactly what it sounds like and yet somehow so much more than you expect. Sam Hargrave, the stunt coordinator turned director who made Extraction and its sequel into Netflix’s most punishing action franchises, has teamed with Apple Original Films and Mattel Studios to turn a die-cast toy brand into a globetrotting heist film starring John Cena and Jessica Biel.
The premise follows Sean, a former soldier played by Cena, who reunites with his childhood friends after a successful mission only to be kidnapped and framed. The group must clear their names and rediscover their friendship during a high-stakes cross-continental adventure that apparently involves a lot of very small cars doing very big stunts. It is basically The A-Team if Hannibal Smith collected toy automobiles as a child and then used them to escape international mercenaries.
Hargrave shot the film across five countries, including Budapest, Casablanca, Erfoud, Merzouga, Slovakia, and Los Angeles. That is more passport stamps than most people accumulate in a decade, and it suggests that Matchbox The Movie is operating on a scale far beyond the usual toy-to-film adaptation. The cast also includes Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Randeep Hooda, Danai Gurira, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp, which is an ensemble so deep it feels like Hargrave is preparing for a heist of his own.

David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay, and the film is produced by Skydance Media’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger alongside Mattel Studios executives Ynon Kreiz and Robbie Brenner. Apple has scheduled Matchbox The Movie for an October 9, 2026 release on Apple TV, giving families a high-octane alternative to whatever horror movie is dominating theaters that weekend.
