Pedro Pascal is singing. That’s the headline. The new poster for Behemoth confirms it. Tony Gilroy wrote and directed this thing, and it’s not what you expect. It’s a musical drama. About movie scores. Starring the guy from The Last of Us. Behemoth is weird. That’s why it’s interesting.
The film is Gilroy’s first feature since 2012’s The Bourne Legacy. He’s been busy with Andor, which is one of the best things on television. Behemoth is a different beast entirely. It’s a love letter to movie music, according to early buzz. Pedro Pascal stars alongside Olivia Wilde, Eva Victor, and Will Arnett. The teaser is a minute and thirty-nine seconds long. It shows Pascal in a role unlike anything he’s done before. That’s saying something.
Behemoth is backed by Searchlight Pictures. That’s the same studio that made Poor Things and The Favourite. They know how to handle weird, prestige-y stuff. Gilroy is an Oscar nominee. He wrote Michael Clayton. He wrote Rogue One. He knows how to write a script. Behemoth is his passion project. Those are usually the most interesting ones.
The poster for Behemoth is minimal. It doesn’t give away much. That’s the point. The film is about the creative process. It’s about the people who make movie magic happen behind the scenes. That’s a subject Gilroy knows well. Behemoth is personal. You can feel it.
The release date hasn’t been announced yet. But the teaser is out. The poster is out. Behemoth is coming. If you like Gilroy’s work, this is a must-watch. If you like Pedro Pascal, this is a must-watch. If you like musicals about the music industry, Behemoth is the only thing that matters.
The film is rated R. That’s not a surprise. Gilroy doesn’t do PG. Behemoth is going to be messy. It’s going to be honest. It’s going to be the kind of movie that only gets made once in a while.
Searchlight is putting real money behind Behemoth. They believe in it. That’s a good sign. The teaser looks gorgeous. The cast is stacked. The director is a legend. Behemoth has everything. It just needs a date. When it gets one, you’ll know.
For now, watch the teaser. Look at the poster. Behemoth is coming. And it’s going to be loud.
